In the summer of 2017, the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists in Paderborn hosted the first international Libori Summer School. From July 23 to 28, students and scholars from around the world came together to explore the works of significant women philosophers in four intensive courses – setting a new standard for philosophical education and exchange.

The opening event at the historic Deelenhaus in the heart of Paderborn’s old town was a highlight in itself. Despite the busy Libori festivities, participants from countries like Canada, Russia, and Greece made their way to the welcoming reception – greeted warmly by Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber and Julia Lerius with a carefully planned program, a glass of wine, and a vibrant atmosphere. “I love German architecture – and now we’re in a house like this!” one participant from Russia exclaimed enthusiastically.

Prof. Dr. Ronny Miron (Bar-Ilan University) gave the opening keynote titled “Shakespeare’s Sisters”, inspired by Virginia Woolf. She shed light on how women philosophers like Hedwig Conrad-Martius remained in the shadows of their male contemporaries – a fitting introduction to a week full of engaging discussions.

The final event on July 28 brought reflections, future plans, and a festive atmosphere. Highlights included a creative student performance on Hildegard of Bingen and an inspiring lecture by Dr. Charles Wolfe on Margaret Cavendish. The evening concluded with music, a buffet, and lively conversation.
