Women’s Intellectual Histories from India

A long-standing collaboration on women’s intellectual histories in India

Earlier this week, we introduced Priyanka Jha as one of the keynote speakers of the Libori Summer School 2026 — today, we turn to the wider academic and intellectual cooperation behind it. Our shared work spans conferences, journal publications, and public formats dedicated to recovering and amplifying women’s intellectual histories from India:

1. A central component of this collaboration was the international conference Tracing Modes of Gendered Thinking: Ideation and Philosophy from the Global South, held from December 4–6, 2024 at Banaras Hindu University in Varanasi. Organized by Banaras Hindu University, the Indian Council of Social Science Research, and the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists, the conference addressed questions of gendered thought with a particular focus on perspectives from the Global South.

2. Another outcome of this collaboration is the special issue Life as Text: Women’s Intellectual Histories from India (Journal of the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists, Vol. 3, Issue 2), edited by Priyanka Jha and Bindu K. C. The issue brings together contributions on women’s intellectual histories from India and engages with questions of epistemic exclusion and feminist reinterpretations of intellectual history.

3. Part of the 1000 Places in 1 World seminar series, Priyanka Jha’s talk: „Women’s Cultural Heritage from India“ brings together contributions on literary, philosophical, and historical figures from India with additional perspectives by Arti Minocha, Namrata Chaturvedi, and Sanchayita Paul. 4. Priyanka Jha’s talk „Trailblazing Women of India“ is the final episode of the series focuses on Dakshayani Velayudhan, the only Dalit woman in the Constituent Assembly of India. It traces her role as a political thinker and advocate for equality and social justice. The video situates her work within broader struggles against caste and gender-based exclusion.
