ONLY TWO WEEKS LEFT – EcoTechGender Workshop 2024

Why Interdisciplinary Thinking Matters Now More Than Ever

The EcoTechGender Workshop 2024, hosted by the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists, invites participants to explore the dynamic intersections of ecology, technology, and gender. Set for November 15, 2024, this online event underscores the necessity of interdisciplinary engagement in today’s complex scientific and social landscapes. Organized by Professor Ruth E. Hagengruber and Felix Grewe, the workshop emphasizes the need for a research approach that intertwines the natural sciences, technology, and humanities—a concept that the EcoTechGender project has championed since its founding in 2007.

The traditional boundaries of academic disciplines are breaking down in response to societal challenges, from the COVID-19 pandemic to the demands for gender equality and diverse representation. This shift has unveiled the limitations of isolated research methods, revealing the impact of societal and political contexts on scientific outcomes. Examples range from gender-biased crash test dummies that endanger female drivers to biased algorithms that perpetuate social inequalities. Such cases highlight an urgent need to link cultural studies and humanities with natural, technical, and engineering sciences.

The EcoTechGender Workshop provides a platform to bridge these gaps and challenges researchers to reconsider the impact of social factors on scientific knowledge. By fostering an interdisciplinary discourse, the workshop offers a space where emerging scholars from various academic backgrounds can share innovative perspectives and propose solutions to reshape the future of science.

Keynote and Young Scholars’ Presentations

The workshop will kick off with a keynote by Kateryna Karpenko, Director of the Center for Gender Studies at Kharkiv National Medical University in Ukraine. Her expertise will set the stage for a day of insights and fresh ideas from PhD students and young researchers across disciplines such as STEM, social sciences, gender studies, medicine, and philosophy. Their presentations will delve into the “interference fields” of EcoTechGender, examining how disciplines once seen as separate can now inform and enrich each other.
