New GENDER Issue: “Explosive Truths – A Different History of Philosophy”

GENDER Issue 2|2025

The dominance of male perspectives in the history of ideas within philosophy and the sciences is explicitly called into question in the contributions presented here. Instead, the intellectual achievements of thinkers such as Elise Reimarus, Edith Landmann-Kalischer, Betty Heimann, Maria Mies, and Vandana Shiva take center stage. The authors reconstruct philosophical debates, cultural practices, and scientific discourses from the perspectives of women, highlighting their critical potential for contemporary philosophical and scientific reflection.

The focus section contains five contributions, which, among other things, shed light on Elise Reimarus’ role in the Pantheism Controversy, analyze the Berlin salon culture as a space of emancipation, and introduce the Jewish Indologist Betty Heimann as a pioneer of postcolonial critique of knowledge. In the concluding article, author Priyanka Singh brings the ecofeminist discourse into dialogue with mythological narratives and current political challenges.

The new issue of GENDER – Journal for Gender, Culture and Society (Vol. 17, No. 2/2025) has been published. Under the thematic focus “Explosive Truths – A Different History of Philosophy”, edited by Ruth Edith Hagengruber, Jil Muller, and Felix Grewe, the current issue is dedicated to the reconstruction and critical reassessment of women’s contributions to the history of ideas.
