« […] mais enfin quand il faut s’interroger soi-même, il faut bien avoüer, si l’on est de bonne foi, que nous avons une volonté, que nous avons le pouvoir d’agir, de remuer notre corps, d’apliquer notre esprit à certaines pensées, de suspendre nos desirs. »

– Émilie Du Châtelet, Chap. 5 De la liberté

We are happy to announce our latest update for the Saint Petersburg Manuscripts: The Chapitre 5 De la liberté of our critical online edition of the Saint Petersburg Manuscripts of Émilie Du Châtelet is now online! This chapter was probably intended to be a part of the Institutions. It is one of Du Châtelet’s earlier manuscripts and like the rest of the project’s digitized texts preserved in the Voltaire Collection in the National Library of Russia (NLR).

The project ‘Émilie Du Châtelet (1706-1749). The Saint Petersburg Manuscripts‘ itself is a cooperation between the Center for History of Women Philosophers and Scientists and the National Library of Russia, Saint Petersburg. The aim is to provide the first historical-critical edition of the manuscripts by Du Châtelet preserved in the Voltaire Collection of the National Library of Russia. The digitization and online presentation of the manuscripts has been realized by the NLR. The transcriptions, constitution of critical apparatus, annotations and indices have been realized by the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists and the Centre international d’étude du XVIIIe siècle, Ferney-Voltaire, France.
