Introductory Chapter by Joel Katzav, Dorothy Rogers, and Krist Vaesen in Knowledge, Mind and Reality (Springer 2023)

We are pleased to highlight the introductory chapter “American Women Philosophers: Institutions, Background and Thought” by Joel Katzav, Dorothy Rogers, and Krist Vaesen, published in the 2023 Springer volume Knowledge, Mind and Reality: An Introduction by Early Twentieth-Century American Women Philosophers. This volume is part of the Women in the History of Philosophy and Sciences series (Vol. 18), edited by Ruth Edith Hagengruber, Mary Ellen Waithe, and Gianni Paganini.

This chapter provides the background to the American women philosophers’ works that are introduced and collected in Knowledge, Mind and Reality: An Introduction by Early Twentieth-Century American Women Philosophers. We describe the institutional context which made these works possible and their methodological and theoretical background. We also provide biographies for their authors.

Joel Katzav is also a member of our international network New Voices on Women in the History of Philosophy. He works on early twentieth-century American women philosophers, especially those writing within the idealist and pragmatist traditions. His research contributes to uncovering neglected figures such as Grace A. de Laguna, Marie C. Swabey, and Dorothy Walsh.
