In order to address the “question about essence of the real being as such, in particular of nature” (1965: 396), ontology must inquire not only into “reality as a noematic component”, but also into the “consciousness transcendent reality of the noematic moment of reality” (1965: 397). This last sphere is the “real reality (wirkliche Wirklichkeit)”, which does not belong to the intentional noema, but to the consciousness-independent “factual standing on itself” of the world and its existence (1965: 396). All forms of being take part in “predicative being”, whereby this in turn goes back to “subjective being” or to a formal object as the “subjective carrier” (1957: 39) of the state of affairs (Sachverhalt).

__________

Hedwig Conrad-Martius developed a realist phenomenology which was especially concerned with the ontological constitution of reality. Whereas her early works were still focused on the appearnace of reality in consciousness, from her writings in the early twenties on, the relationship between essence and bearer, as well as the ontological properties of time, space and matter came into the foreground.

Important works include Zur Ontologie und Erscheinungslehre der realen Außenwelt (1916), Realontologie (1923), Die Zeit (1954), Das Sein (1958) and Der Raum (1958).

For an extensive bibliography and further projects see the Directory of Conrad-Martius.
