Research Colloquium

📅 Date: October 20, 2025
🕓 Time: 4:00–6:00 PM
📍 Room: TP8.1.46, Technologiepark 8, 33098 Paderborn

The Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists warmly invites everyone to the upcoming session of our Research Colloquium, featuring Dr. Pierpaolo Betti.

In his talk, Atomism and Monadism Combined: Continuities between Du Châtelet’s and Kant’s Accounts of Matter, Dr. Betti challenges the traditional view that Kant’s early writings reflect a sharp shift between atomism and monadism. Instead, he argues that Kant combined monadism in metaphysics with corpuscularism in physics—an approach that had already been articulated by Émilie Du Châtelet in her Institutions de physique. Drawing on Du Châtelet’s Wolffian influences, Dr. Betti explores how her hybrid theory of matter may have shaped Kant’s early natural philosophy.

Dr. Betti obtained his PhD from KU Leuven in 2025 and will soon join the Center HWPS as a postdoctoral researcher contributing to the historical-critical edition of Du Châtelet’s Institutions de physique.

Everybody is welcome to attend!
