Tullio Viola New Voices Research Profile

My research is on the history of late modern philosophy, particularly American pragmatism and European philosophy, focusing on the intersection of science and culture. I’m especially interested in how our understanding of the social embeddedness of knowledge can be deepened and enriched by attending to channels that are not commonly addressed by epistemologists—such as stories, figurative practices, and inherited traditions. I also examine how concepts of culture and cultural transmission were shaped at the intersection of philosophy and socio-cultural sciences around the turn of the twentieth century, and how these frameworks continue to influence contemporary thought. Methodologically, my work combines the history of philosophy with cultural and intellectual history, alongside theoretical reflection.
