My PhD research concerns the American philosopher and psychologist Mary Whiton Calkins (1863 – 1930). The focus is on the role of Calkins’s philosophical thought for the development of modern psychology at the turn of the twentieth century. Special attention will be given to her establishment of “self psychology,” a school based on the conviction that psychology should fundamentally be a study of conscious selves, both in relation to other selves and to objects in the environment.
