What Is Europe Doing with Its Philosophical Heritage?

Ruth E. Hagengruber at the 23rd Bayreuther Dialoge – EUphorie! Zurück in unsere Zukunft

Saturday, October 24, 2026 | 9:30 AM | University of Bayreuth, Germany

Prof. Dr. Ruth E. Hagengruber, President of the German Society for Philosophy (DGPhil) and Director of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists (HWPS), will speak at the Bayreuther Dialoge on Europe’s philosophical heritage and its significance for rethinking Europe’s future.

Abstract:

What is Europe doing with its philosophical heritage? Europe is in crisis – but crises are not unique to Europe. What is more interesting is something else: ideas that originated in Europe have long since ceased to be exclusively European. America developed its own philosophy out of European traditions; today, China studies and transforms Kant, Hegel, and Marx, as well as European ontology, epistemology, and AI ethics. While Europe debates economic strength, defense, and competitiveness, a different question arises: What is Europe itself doing with its philosophical heritage? Neither lamenting Europe’s decline nor glossing over its problems will help. Rethinking Europe means critically examining its ideas, taking their contradictions seriously, and unfolding their still unrealized potential.
