Ruth E. Hagengruber at the Conference 'Epistémologie et métaphysique : Pour de nouveaux récits en histoire de la philosophie' in Paris Nanterre, 8-9 March 2023

From 8th to 9th March 2023, the conference ‘Epistémologie et métaphysique : Pour de nouveaux récits en histoire de la philosophie’, organized by Anne-Lise Rey, takes place at the Université Paris-Nanterre. On 9th March, Ruth E. Hagengruber will contribute a talk for the session on Émilie Du Châtelet.

Ruth E. Hagengruber’s talk ‘Du Châtelet and the ‘Copernican turn” discovers the influence Du Châtelet had for Kant’s famous transcendental turn.

Hagengruber claims: “Whoever reads the text from Du Châtelet must be stunned how many crucial concepts have echoes in Kant. Finally, it is clear that both are rooted in the philosophy of Leibniz and Wolff. Thus, the Kant-Eberhard controversy adds new material to the Kant as well as to the Du Châtelet research. Du Châtelet’s Institutions are part of this development of German rationalism and transcendental philosophy. We need a new reading of Du Châtelet and Kant that promises new insights on what is known as the transcendental (or Copernican) turn in the history of philosophy.” (Hagengruber 2022, 81)

Du 8 au 9 mars 2023, le colloque ‘Epistémologie et métaphysique : Pour de nouveaux récits en histoire de la philosophie’, organisé par Anne-Lise Rey, a lieu à l’Université Paris-Nanterre. Le 9 mars, Ruth E. Hagengruber interviendra dans le cadre de la session consacrée à Émilie Du Châtelet.

La présentation de Ruth E. Hagengruber, “Du Châtelet and the ‘Copernican turn'” examine l’influence de Du Châtelet sur le célèbre tournant transcendantal de Kant.

Hagengruber affirme : “Celui qui lit le texte de Du Châtelet doit être stupéfait.e de voir combien de concepts cruciaux ont des échos chez Kant. Enfin, il est clair que tous deux sont enracinés dans la philosophie de Leibniz et de Wolff. Ainsi, la controverse Kant-Eberhard ajoute du nouveau matériel à la recherche sur Kant ainsi qu’à celle sur Du Châtelet. Les Institutions de Du Châtelet font partie de ce développement du rationalisme allemand et de la philosophie transcendantale. Nous avons besoin d’une nouvelle lecture de Du Châtelet et de Kant qui promet de nouvelles perspectives sur ce que l’on appelle le tournant transcendantal (ou copernicien) dans l’histoire de la philosophie.” (Hagengruber 2022, 81, Translation Shari Wölker)
