The Faculty of Arts and Humanities, Institute of Human Sciences in the subject of Philosophy, is offering a full-time PhD position (100% regular working time), starting as soon as possible. This opportunity is an ideal fit for candidates passionate about early modern philosophy and women philosophers of the 16th to 18th centuries.

  • Position Type: Full-time, initially fixed to one year under the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” (WissZeitVG).
  • Research Focus: Development of a dissertation in the field of research into the texts of women philosophers of the early modern period, exploring themes like:
    1. Human beings as total entities (body, mind, and union).
    2. Humans in their natural and environmental context.
    3. Humans as “suffering beings” (e.g., diseases, melancholy).
    4. Humans as “self-healing beings” (e.g., self-knowledge, passions).
    5. Humans as social and political beings (e.g., friendship, power, responsibility).

Responsibilities:

  • Teaching commitment of 4 semester hours per week.
  • Active participation in Dr. Jil Muller’s research and the affiliated HWPS Centre for Research into the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists.
  • Development of a dissertation topic aligned with the outlined research areas.

Requirements:

  • Excellent academic degree (Master) in philosophy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in early modern philosophy (e.g., master’s thesis topic).
  • Proficiency in English (additional European languages like French, Spanish, or Italian are advantageous).
  • Independent working style and interdisciplinary experience.
