This edition of the New Voices on Women in the History of Philosophy is organized by Pedro Pricladnitzky, Research Associate at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists, dedicated to Women Philosophers from Latin America.
The works of Latin American women philosophers as well as theorists from related disciplines stand as a testament to the rich scenario of philosophical inquiry emerging from their diverse cultural, historical, and political contexts. Their scholarship not only offers penetrating insights into enduring philosophical questions but also serves as a potent catalyst for interrogating and reshaping dominant paradigms within the field.
On Wednesday, September 18th, at 16h30 Viridiana Benitez (Universidad Veracruzana) will present:
“Manuela Sáenz: liberty beyond the gender”
This paper examines the meaning of the idea of liberty in the thought of Manuela Saenz (1797-1856). Although Saenz is not a philosopher in the canonical sense, the traces of a political thought at the height of the radical social transformations in South America at the beginning of the 19th century are undeniable: the wars of independence and the project of forming the Patria Grande, the Great Colombia. Therefore, in order to appreciate Manuela Saenz’s contribution to the study of women thinkers, it’s important to understand that we won’t find in her writings any such systematic thought, but rather the expression of an ideal of liberty that underlies her revolutionary action and her life in exile, and that represents a particular women view of the social transformations in Latin America.
