From September 8 to 12, 2025, the annual Libori Summer School of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists took place at Paderborn University. Under the title The Early Works of Émilie Du Châtelet, the week-long event was dedicated to exploring the early writings of one of the most influential women of the French Enlightenment.
The Summer School was opened by Prof. Dr. Ruth Edith Hagengruber, director of the Center, who emphasized the international scope of the event. Already on the very first day, the diversity of Du Châtelet’s thought became clear: ranging from moral-philosophical questions in the Commentary on Mandeville, to concepts of liberty in the Essay on Liberty, and epistemological reflections in the Essays on Colours.
Highlights of the week included the keynote lectures by international scholars: Viridiana Platas Benitez, Bryce Gessell, Ruth E. Hagengruber, Julia Jorati, Eszter Kovács, Ulla Kölving, Fritz Nagel, Katarina Peixoto, Pedro Pricladnitzky, Ana Rodrigues, and Judith Zinsser.
Young researchers and students from across the globe presented their own analyses—some for the very first time—actively contributing to the dialogue. This combination of established voices and emerging scholarship offered especially younger participants valuable insights and learning opportunities.
Beyond the lectures, there was also time for personal encounters: during shared lunches, in discussion rounds, or at a relaxed evening at the AStA Stadtcampus with Indian food. These informal exchanges were highlighted by participants as particularly valuable—new contacts were made, and ideas for future collaborations emerged.
We sincerely thank all speakers, students, and guests for their contributions and commitment.
