Actually, women do not appear in the canon of philosophy – at least not before the 20th century.
“That’s not true. Hildegard von Bingen, Elisabeth of Bohemia were not only famous figures in their time, much quoted, even by men. And even in an epoch that was already concerned with canon formation, namely the 18th century, women are included, far too few of course. Émilie du Châtelet, which had a great impact in Germany, is repeatedly counted among the 100 most important texts of the epoch. Anyone who deals even a little with the history of philosophy inevitably encounters philosophising women.”

Und selbst in einer Epoche, die sich schon mit Kanonbildung beschäftigte, nämlich das 18. Jahrhundert, werden Frauen, natürlich viel zu wenige, eingeschlossen. Émilie du Châtelet, die eine große Wirkung in Deutschland hatte, wird mehrfach zu den 100 wichtigsten Texten der Epoche gezählt. Wer sich auch nur ein bisschen mit Philosophiegeschichte beschäftigt, trifft unweigerlich auch auf philosophierende Frauen.”
