We are delighted to invite you to a special event at Paderborn University on November 22, 2024, at 11 a.m. in Room J4.219. Renowned Finnish literary scholar, narrative theorist, and novelist Hanna Meretoja will present her debut novel, _Die Nacht der alten Feuer_ (Elotulet), now available in German translation (translated by Stefan Moster, Mare Verlag). This novel, deeply influenced by Meretoja’s personal journey through illness, weaves literary fiction with philosophical reflection.
The novel tells the story of Elea, who has recently been diagnosed with a serious illness. On the Night of Ancient Lights, she gathers close friends to reflect on their pasts and futures. Against the backdrop of blazing bonfires illuminating the archipelago, Meretoja interlaces deeply personal narratives with global crises such as the pandemic and climate change. The novel explores the fragility of life, the loss of the illusion of control, and the emergence of hope and joy through connection—with others and with nature.
During the event, Meretoja will not only read excerpts from her novel but also discuss her writing process and the philosophical themes embedded in the story. Her academic research—focused on the narrativization of illness and trauma, the interplay of life and narrative, and the role of water in literature—serves as a foundation for the novel. Additionally, her scholarly engagement with cultural theory and figures like Hannah Arendt is intricately woven into the narrative fabric of the book.
Hanna Meretoja is Professor of Comparative Literature and Director of the SELMA Centre for the Study of Storytelling, Experientiality, and Memory at the University of Turku, Finland. Her research spans Narrative Studies, Trauma Studies, and Medical Humanities. Among her notable works is _The Ethics of Storytelling_ (2018, Oxford University Press). Her own experience with breast cancer in 2019 inspired her to write _Die Nacht der alten Feuer_, marking her literary debut.
This event provides a unique opportunity to discover an extraordinary novel and delve into the intersection of literature, philosophy, and personal experience. Organized by Maria Robaszkiewicz and Jarmila Mildorf in collaboration with the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists, this event promises to be both thought-provoking and inspiring.
We look forward to seeing you there!
