Geneviève Barrette - New Voices Research Profile

My research focuses on the history of ideas in the 13th and 14th centuries in relation to the doctrinal condemnations and teaching prescriptions issued by the religious orders. In particular, my work leads me to appreciate the marked influence of Godfrey of Fontaines on the Dominican Hervaeus Natalis, which sets him in opposition on several important points to Thomas Aquinas, of whom Hervaeus claims to be an inveterate defender. I am also interested in the thought of Marguerite Porete, in particular in the preparatory role of reason and virtue with regard to the mystical state which she portrays in her Mirror of Simple Souls, a work whose value Godefroid de Fontaines had apparently recognised, but which was declared heretical by the religious authorities.
