Francesca Maria Villani - New Voices Research Profile

The research explores the work of Afro-diasporic women composers to investigate the mechanisms of exclusion within musical language and the potential for their deconstruction. The interdisciplinary methodology combines decolonial and feminist studies with politics of music. The first part of the thesis focuses on the philosophy of listening, particularly the power dynamics that permeate this concept and its development within feminist philosophy. The second part is dedicated to case studies (classical music composed between the 20th and 21st centuries) and the intertwining of aesthetics, the biopolitics of bodies and the possibilities for resistance inherent in musical discourse.
