Founded in 1993 as a research unit originally dedicated to the Philosophy of Language, the NOVA Institute of Philosophy (IFILNOVA) has since established itself as a center of excellence among research units in Portugal. The Institute’s mission is to develop innovative research programs across different areas of philosophy, while applying philosophical theories to concrete social practices and contemporary problems. The Institute is structured around four distinct Laboratories, which share a common thematic framework but operate in different fields of study, each adopting its own preferred research strategies. Since 2014, the Nova Institute of Philosophy has significantly strengthened its international profile, as evidenced by the growing number of publications in leading international journals and with prestigious publishers, as well as by its successful participation in several European research projects.
