On the first day of the IAPh Symposium 2025, Dr. Yasu Furukawa opened the academic program of the conference with Keynote 1, chaired by Prof. Fumi Yao (University of Tokyo).
Dr. Furukawa is a visiting scholar at the Graduate University for Advanced Studies (SOKENDAI). After studying engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology, he earned his Ph.D. in the history of science from the University of Oklahoma (USA). His academic career bridges technology and the humanities, Japan and the United States, industrial history and gender studies. His book “Tsuda Umeko – The Road to Science, the Dream of a University” was awarded the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award as well as the Special Prize of the Japanese Society for the History of Science in 2022.
In his keynote titled “Tsuda Umeko and Biology – A Historical Perspective on Science and Gender”, Furukawa shed light on the life of Japanese educational reformer Tsuda Umeko (1864–1929). As Japan’s first female exchange student, Tsuda traveled to the United States at the age of seven. She later founded what is now known as Tsuda University, with the aim of advancing women’s roles in science and society.
