Predoc Position in Early Modern Philosophy at the Center

The Faculty of Arts and Humanities – Institute of Human Sciences in the subject of Philosophy – offers a full-time position (100 % of the regular working time), which will start at the earliest opportunity.
Employment as a doctoral student is initially fixed to one year and adheres to the legal regulations laid out in the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” (WissZeitVG). This is a position, which serves the acquisition of scientific competences through the development of a dissertation topic in the field of research into the texts of women philosophers of the early modern period (16th to 18th century).
Position description and responsibilities:
• Teaching commitment of usually 4 semester hours per week
• Active participation in the research area of Dr Jil Muller and the Chair of Practical Philosophy, as well as the affiliated HWPS Centre for Research into the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists in the Early Modern and Modern Periods.
• Acquisition of scientific competences through the development of a dissertation topic in the interfaces to Dr Muller’s research topic: women philosophers of the Renaissance/early modern period and modern times on, for example, 1) man as a total being (union, body, mind, etc.); 2) man as a being in an environment (natural environment such as weather, food, plants; sublunar environment, etc.); 3) man as a ‘suffering being’ (melancholy, fever and other diseases and suffering); 4) man as a ‘self-healing being’ (self-knowledge, passions, etc.); and 5) man as a social and political being (friendship, power, responsibility, etc.).
Your profile:
• Very good academic degree (Master)
• Proven knowledge in the field of early modern philosophy (master’s thesis)
• Good knowledge of written and spoken English, another European language (French/Spanish/Italian) is an advantage.
• Independent working style, willingness to work in an interdisciplinary context, experience in presenting research using modern communication techniques.
