Tatiana Barkovskiy - New Voices Research Profile

Name: Tatiana Barkovskiy

Research: medieval philosophy, medieval women philosophers, Marguerite Porete, Mechthild of Magdeburg

Affiliation: University of Cambridge

I am a Doctoral Researcher in Philosophy at Trinity College, University of Cambridge. My primary area of research centres on medieval women philosophers and philosophy of gender, with a particular focus on the epistemology, metaphysics, and ethics expressed in the works of thirteenth-century women, such as Marguerite Porete, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Hadewijch of Brabant, Beatrice of Nazareth, and Angela of Foligno, but I have also worked on Hildegard of Bingen, Julian of Norwich, and Christine de Pizan. I aim to demonstrate that the legacy of thinkers commonly referred to as medieval female ‘mystics’ can be considered philosophically engaging and as such deserving of more in-depth study by historians of philosophy and inclusion into the canon. In connection to these issues, I am also interested in the wider history of women philosophers, feminist epistemology, the concepts of mysticism or ‘mystical thinking’ in philosophy, metaphilosophy, and new histories of philosophy.
