Tiziana Faitini: “Work is more than Work. Some Thoughts on the Experience of Professionalism and Socio-Political Inclusion“.
Hannah Arendt, in her 1958 essay on the human condition, judged it urgent to deplore the “theoretical glorification of labour.” Sixty years later, however, it is instead the “theoretical glorification of profession” which has gained momentum. The knowledge economy and neoliberal rationality – the nouvelle raison du monde, as it has been called – emphasise the value of a free, innovative, intellectual occupation, usually referred to as a “profession.”
In an attempt to address these questions, the talk will look at professionalism as an experience, that is – to recast the definition of the latter notion given by Michel Foucault in his genealogical studies on sexuality – as the correlation “of fields of knowledge, types of normativity and forms of subjectivity.” Taking this approach, Tiziana Faitini will investigate the conditions under which professional activtity has been the object of a wide problematisation, involving different fields of knowledge, specific norms and a distinct way of conceiving one’s own identity, behaviour, duties, and abilities.

Tiziana Faitini, is Assistant Professor at the University of Trento, she was in 2016 post- doctoral fellow at the Leibniz Institute for European History in Mainz and in 2018-2019, Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND fellow at the Max Weber Centre for Advanced Cultural and Social Studies in Erfurt. Her research focusses on philosophy and the interconnection to economy. In particular she explores the genealogy of the political, moral, legal and economic valorisation of professional activity and work in Western society. In Hannah Arendts Essay von 1958 über the human condition hielt sie es für dringend geboten, die “theoretical glorification of labour” zu beklagen. Sechzig Jahre später hat jedoch stattdessen die “theoretical glorification of profession” an Bedeutung gewonnen. Die wissensbasierte Wirtschaft und die neoliberale Rationalität – die so genannte “nouvelle raison du monde” – betonen den Wert einer freien, innovativen und intellektuellen Tätigkeit, die gewöhnlich als “Beruf” bezeichnet wird.
In dem Versuch, diese Fragen zu beantworten, wird der Vortrag Professionalität als Erfahrung betrachten, d.h. – um die von Michel Foucault in seinen genealogischen Studien zur Sexualität gegebene Definition des letzteren Begriffs neu zu fassen – als Korrelation “of fields of knowledge, types of normativity and forms of subjectivity.” Ausgehend von diesem Ansatz wird Tiziana Faitini die Bedingungen untersuchen, unter denen die berufliche Tätigkeit Gegenstand einer umfassenden Problematisierung war, die verschiedene Wissensbereiche, spezifische Normen und eine bestimmte Art und Weise, die eigene Identität, das Verhalten, die Pflichten und die Fähigkeiten zu begreifen, umfasst.

Tiziana Faitini, ist Assistant Professor an der University of Trento. Sie war 2016 Post-Doc-Stipendiatin am Leibniz-Institut für Europäische Geschichte in Mainz und 2018-2019, Marie Skłodowska-Curie COFUND-Stipendiatin am Max-Weber-Zentrum für Kultur- und Sozialwissenschaften in Erfurt. Ihr Forschungsschwerpunkt liegt im Bereich der Philosophie und deren Verbindung zur Ökonomie. Insbesondere erforscht sie die Genealogie der politischen, moralischen, rechtlichen und ökonomischen Inwertsetzung von Berufstätigkeit und Arbeit in der westlichen Gesellschaft.
