Women and Sport 2023: Clara Mavellia CE Berlin & Center HWPS celebrating Seia Spes

Clara Mavellia director CE Berlin  and Ruth E. Hagengruber director Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists cooperate in celebrating the ancient athlete Seia Spes.

Seia Spes wins at Sebasta, Isolympic Games in Naples in 154 AD! Seia Spes is honoured for having won in 154 A.D., in the stadium in a particular category: that reserved for the daughters of councillors. Further infortmation can be found in Di Nanni 2021.

Read the honorary inscription written on the marble base found walled in the church of S. Restituta:

This base, brought to light during excavations in 1952, was walled up so that only the side face was visible, quoted according Di Nanni 2021, 140.

“Seia Spes, daughter of Seius Liberalis … having won in the simple race among the daughters of the councillors in the 39th Italide”, a dedication most probably from her husband. “The inscription is engraved on a marble cippus, which however lacks the statue of the winner, found under the church of S. Restituta in Lacco Ameno, Ischia.” For more, see Di Nanni 2021, 140.
