Philippa Foot was a British philosopher known for her work in ethics, particularly in virtue ethics. She was a key figure in reviving Aristotelian ethics in the 20th century, focusing on the role of virtues in moral reasoning. Foot is also famous for introducing along with Judith Jarvis Thomson the “trolley problem,” a thought experiment used to explore moral dilemmas. Her notable works include Virtues and Vices and other Essays in Moral Philosophy (1978) and Natural Goodness (2001), where she examined morality in terms of human nature and practical reason. She taught at Oxford and University of California, Los Angeles.
