Allauren Samantha Forbes - New Voices Research Profile

My research is at the intersection of femininst philosophy and early modern European philosophy. I focus on socio-political relations like custom, courtship, friendship, and marriage as a means of epistemic, moral, and political transformation and possibility in the works of early modern European women philosophers such as Astell, Cavendish, Gournay, and Scudéry.

While my main interests lie in European women philosophers active in the 16-18th centuries, I am working on a project on women philosophers’ views on marriage that extends into the 19th century. Here, I look to folks like Emma Goldman and Victoria Claflin Woodhull, folks whose views highlight the gendered labour elements of marriage along the philosophical axes of sexuality and autonomy.
