DESCRIPTION:SWIP Austria – Solidarity and Resistance – a Philosophical Approach\n\n\nThe Society for Women in Philosophy is hosting an international Symposium on Solidarity and Resistance on the 5th and 6th of November. Solidarity as “connected with”: With whom and against what? In what sense could solidarity and resistance should be viewed as a duty to oneself? There are different aspects of solidarity: universal solidarity\, which includes all people because they are human beings (human rights)\, excludes no one and applies unconditionally; also more limited conceptions\, related to a specific group(-identity)\, whereby it easily becomes clear that the theme of identity and belonging cannot be avoided. Solidarity as “being committed to one another”: But who belongs to this “for each other”? Are all people included\, or merely one’s own gender\, ethnicity\, class\, political group and ideological identity? All others\, who don’t fit into “my / a definition” of “we” would be marginalized and excluded. DESCRIPTION:Talk | 12.11.2021 | Du Châtelet on the Need for Mathematics in Physics | Aaron Wells\nOn the 12th of November Aaron Wells is giving a talk on “Du Châtelet on the Need for Mathematics in Physics\,” at the biennial meeting of the Philosophy of Science Association\, in Baltimore\, MD\, USA.He is going to present in the Section History of Physics. Aaron Wells is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists. He is working on the digital critical edition of the Paris manuscript of Du Châtelet’s Institutions de Physique.\n\nFor further information on the program and talk\, click here: https://psa2020.philsci.org/…/pro…/84/history-of-physics \n\n\n\n\nThere is a tension in Emilie Du Châtelet’s thought on mathematics. The objects of mathematics are ideal or fictional entities; nevertheless\, mathematics is presented as indispensable for an account of the physical world. After outlining Du Châtelet’s position\, and showing how she departs from Christian Wolff’s pessimism about Newtonian mathematical physics\, I show that the tension in her position is only apparent. Du Châtelet has a worked-out defense of the and epistemic need for mathematical objects\, consistent with their metaphysical non-fundamentality. I conclude by sketching how Du Châtelet’s conception of mathematical indispensability differs interestingly from many contemporary approaches

SUMMARY:Space and Time:  18th -19th Century Women Philosophers and Scientists
DESCRIPTION:Find all talks recorded as podcast here. \nFrom 22nd November to 26th November 2021\, Prof. George N. Vlahakis from the Hellenic Open University\, School of Humanities and Prof. Chelsea C. Harry from Southern Connecticut State University (USA) will visit the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists. Prof. Vlahakis comes for the first visit for the opening of the joint Erasmus Study program between the two universities: the University of Paderborn and the Hellenic Open University. \nDuring their stay\, the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists\, under the direction of Ruth Hagengruber\, organizes a workshop\, under the organisation of Dr. Jil Muller\, on “Space and Time: 18th–19th century Women Philosophers and Scientists.” Four research talks will address four female philosophers. Dr. Clara Carus will talk about Émilie du Châtelet to show her unique approach to the concepts of relative and absolute space. Du Châtelet’s 1740 Institutions de physique includes extended discussions of space and time\, and she takes the clarification of these concepts to be crucial for the foundations of physics. Du Châtelet went on to translate and comment on Newton’s Principia\, in addition to writings on experimental philosophy\, biblical criticism\, ethics\, and more. Prof. Chelsea C. Harry will speak about temporality in the work of Karoline von Günderrode. She was a German poet of the Romantic period\, that irritated many of her readers. Like other romantics such as Hölderlin\, she was enthusiastic about the ideas of the French Revolution\, and she was imbued\, from an early age\, with the great themes of her work: slavery and freedom\, love and death. By writing on these themes\, she apparently violated conventions of the time about how a woman should behave and how she should write poetry. She also was the mistress of a married man and was burdened by the irresolvable conflict between her need for freedom and the female role of the time. Dr. Jil Muller will talk about Sophie Germain and her conception of space and time in Pensées diverses. The French mathematician\, who had to exchange letters under a male pseudonym to get in contact with great Parisian professors\, is famous for the Sophie Germain theorem concerning numbers. She wrote one major philosophical text\, that was published posthumously by her nephew\, Considérations générales sur l’état des Sciences et des Lettres aux différentes époques de leur culture\, to which the Pensées diverses were a crucial addition. Prof. George N. Vlahakis will invent an imaginative dialogue between Hegel and Helle Lambrides on time. Lambrides was a Greek female philosopher of the 20th century. She published over 100 works on many topics\, from the history of ancient Greek philosophy to modern analytic philosophy and even Husserl\, Heidegger and Sartre. \nThe event will be hybrid\, partly in person and partly online\, via Zoom. Hagengruber: The Third Knowledge Dimension. – How Epistemology changes in the Age of AI. 16Uhr \nDie digitalen Technologien haben das Potenzial\, eine neue Renaissance von Menschheit und Planeten zu entfalten oder sie zu zerstören. Mit der dritten digitalen Konferenz Ethik und Digitalisierung am 25.11.2021\, 14 – 19 Uhr\, möchten wir anhand von theoretischen und praktischen Beispielen aus Wissenschaft\, Wirtschaft und Politik sowie gesellschaftlichem Engagement darüber informieren\, wie wir die Digitalisierung der Gesellschaft zum Wohl der Menschheit und des Planeten einsetzen können. Das Narrativ der Digitalisierung verbreitet schon länger\,\nmeistens beunruhigende\, dystopische Visionen für die Zukunft. Diese Ängste werden ferner bewusst von politischen Akteuren geschürt\, die mit ihren irreführenden Inhalten SocialMedia Plattformen überschwemmen\, Menschen anlocken und u.a. Wahlen manipulieren. Populisten\, Diktatoren und Fundamentalisten setzen die modernsten technologischen Anwendungen ein\, um Bürger*innen zu kontrollieren und Konsens zu bilden. Dabei verbreiten sie zurückgewandte ideologische Ansichten\, in denen wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse\, ethische Prinzipien und demokratische Werte keine Rolle spielen. Solche Figuren sind zunehmend auch im Cyberraum aktiv\, um für sie feindliche Unternehmen\, Organisationen sowie Aktivist*innen zu bedrohen oder sogar mundtot zu machen. Selbst die Infrastruktur von – demokratischen – Staaten würden sie lahmlegen\, um ihren geopolitischen Einfuss zu erweitern. Europa hat bereits erste Schritte zur Regulierung von TechRiesen und den Schutz von Daten und privacy gesetzt und arbeitet weiter daran. Gegen Hacker wird derzeit Cybersecurity intensiviert\, um demokratische Ordnung und Bürger*innen zu schützen. Darüber hinaus sollen Freiheit und Transparenz im Netz garantiert\, soziale Ungleichheit reduziert\, green growth gesteigert und gleichzeitig gendered innovation entfaltet werden. \nAuch NextGenerationEU\, der post-pandemische Aufbauplan der EU-Kommission\, richtet sich nach den Leitprinzipien der makroökomischen Wirtschaft\, Produktivität\, Gerechtigkeit und ökologischen Nachhaltigkeit. Deshalb müssen die Aufbaupläne der Mitgliedstaaten zu einem grünen\, digitalen und nachhaltigen Aufschwung beitragen. Damit kann Europa ökologische Innovation und wirtschaftlichen Erfolg ermöglichen und andere Länder inspirieren. Viele Institutionen\, Unternehmen und große Teile der Gesellschaft sind bereits offen für derartige Lösungen und dafür\, dass Ökologie\, Demokratie und alle humanistischen Werte\, auf die sich die EU gründet\, auch in der digitalen Sphäre gesichert werden. Wichtig ist es auch\, die Digitalisierung so zu gestalten\, dass sie Frauen und Männern gleiche Chancen bietet. Dabei sprechen wir nicht nur über den Pay Gap zwischen den Geschlechtern\, sondern alles\, was dazu gehört. Ihre Forschungsthemen umfassen den Gender Gap auf dem Arbeitsmarkt\, z.B. beim Verdienst\, in Führungspositionen oder auch bei der Arbeitszeit. Elke Holst ist seit Beginn im FAZ-Ökonomenranking vertreten\, zuletzt belegte sie den 54. Rang (2018). Auch das Manager Magazin zählt Elke Holst zu den 100 einflussreichsten Frauen der deutschen Wirtschaft (Stand Januar 2019). Sie hat weit über 400 Publikationen zu ihren Schwerpunktthemen veröffentlicht. Ihr Managerinnen-Barometer und der Führungskräfte-Monitor gehören zum festen Instrumentarium der empirischen Wirtschaftsforschung und informieren über die Arbeits- und Lebensumstände von Führungskräften in der Privatwirtschaft in Deutschland. Für ZDF-Reportagen war sie u. a. zweimal in Tschetschenien\, sie berichtete aus kroatischen Flüchtlingslagern über Massenvergewaltigungen während des Bosnienkrieges und arbeitete als Reporterin im Gaza-Streifen und in Indien. \n  \nWas wir heute in der Ukraine erleben\, hat in den 90er-Jahren begonnen\, sagt der russische Schriftsteller Sergej Lebedew in einem Interview im Deutschlandfunk. Von 1997 bis 2000 präsentierte Maria von Welser in der ZDF-Sendung Mit mir nicht! Welsers Fälle skandalöse Geschäftspraktiken\, Behördenwillkür oder sonstige Missstände. Sie war Leiterin des ZDF-Auslandstudios in  London und später Direktorin des Landesfunkhauses Hamburg. Im Sommer 2010 berichtete von Welser als Ostasien-Korrespondentin für die ARD. \nMaria von Welser ist seit 1995 Mitglied des Deutschen Komitees für UNICEF\, sie war stellvertretende Vorsitzende von UNICEF Deutschland\, Lehrbeauftragte an den Universitäten Hamburg und Paderborn. SUMMARY:New Voices Summer Term Talk Series on Émilie Du Châtelet: Andrea Reichenberger
DESCRIPTION:We are delighted to announce the official beginning of the New Voices series of talks for Summer 2022\, which will focus on Du Châtelet. You are warmly invited to the first presentation\, which is by Andrea Reichenberger on “Émilie Du Châtelet as a Key Figure of the European Enlightenment: Challenges and Perspectives for Research and Teaching Practices.” This online talk will be hosted on Zoom on the 19th of May at 5PM CET. \n  \nAndrea Reichenberger works on history and philosophy of science\, currently at the Institute of Philosophy at the University of Hagen\, Germany. She is especially interested in women’s contributions to logic\, mathematics and computer science\, because it is of the utmost importance to show (especially to younger generations) the impact of female researchers to the history of philosophy and science. Andrea has published numerous articles on this subject in journals\, edited volumes\, and encyclopedias. These include studies on Émilie Du Châtelet\, Grete Hermann\, and Ilse Rosenthal-Schneider. Previously\, she worked on research projects including the DFG research project Thought Experiment\, Metaphor\, Model at the Institute for Philosophy I at the Ruhr University Bochum. She has also worked at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists (HWPS) at Paderborn University. Her doctoral dissertation was published by Springer as Émilie Du Châtelets Institutions physiques in 2016. \n  \nAbstract of the talk: Émilie Du Châtelet (1706–1749) is among those women who illuminated the Enlightenment through their writings. Through their intellectual salons\, women played a pivotal role in spreading the ideas of the European Enlightenment. But Du Châtelet accomplished still more than that. She was among the French mathematicians\, physicists and philosophers who revolutionized science and altered the way we look at the world. In Cirey\, she established a research center which became part of an elite network\, linked to the European academies. She transformed and modernized the physics of Newton’s Principia\, and laid a solid foundation for the principle of the conservation of energy. Her thoughts found their way into the Encyclopédie\, and her engagement in favor of human reason played an important role in the intellectual movements shaping the face of Enlightenment philosophy. This talk will address some of the challenges for current Du Châtelet scholarship concerning research and teaching practices. These challenges concern\, for example\, a possible new critical edition of Du Châtelet’s Principia-commentary (research) and the question of the teaching practice of classical mechanics\, its philosophy\, and its history (science education). \n  \nI hope many of you will be able to join us for an interesting talk and a friendly and engaged discussion!  If you have registered for the New Voices talk series previously\, you do not need to register again. SUMMARY:Voices from Ukraine: Women Philosophers and Scientists in the Situation of War
DESCRIPTION:A cooperation between Kateryna Karpenko\, Director of the Center for Gender Studies\, Kharkiv National Medical University\, and Ruth Edith Hagengruber\, Director of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists\n  \nWhen?             May 27th – May 28th 2022 \nWhere?            Zoom  \nWhat?              Hybrid Conference \nAlmost three months have passed since Russia launched a full-scale war against Ukraine\, bringing death\, suffering\, destruction and radically changing the established way of life. Many people have moved to quieter areas of Ukraine\, many have found temporary shelter abroad. The shock of the first days of the war is being replaced by the need to comprehend the current situation in various contexts\, including articulating the issues of gender parity in scientific ethos in a new way. \nThe purpose of the conference “Voices from Ukraine: History of Women Philosophers and Scientists in the Situation of War”\, on the one hand\, is to support and continue scientific cooperation with the Center for Gender Education of Kharkiv National Medical University\, and on the other hand\, to create a scientific platform for the exchange of thoughts on the life trajectories of women scientists in war and their prospects.  \nAn important topic of discussion will be the position of women researchers in the social sciences and humanities\, where the proportion of women exceeds 60%. Low wages\, involuntary part-time work\, short-term contracts\, self-financing of research—all these characteristics of the position of scientists and researchers can be interpreted as markers of an unsustainable situation\, which is undoubtedly exacerbated by war.  \nMany Ukrainian women scientists came to Germany after the start of a full-scale war in Ukraine on guest invitations from local universities and foundations. The conference will discuss the problems of integration into German academic life and the continuation of an academic career. \nAn important topic of discussion will be the existential dimensions of war and peace in the context of the search for meaning in life and self-realization of women. Ecofeminism and the ethics of care will become the methodological basis for analyzing the environmental consequences of war. \n  \nFind more information here.
