SUMMARY:Research Colloquium - Eszter Kovács: The Dissertation on Fire by Émilie Du Châtelet in light of its sources
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists’ Research Colloquium in the Winter Semester 2026/27\, we are pleased to welcome Dr. Eszter Kovács (FCiências.ID\, Lisbon\, and Vrije Universiteit Brussel)\, who will present her talk entitled “The Dissertation on Fire by Émilie Du Châtelet in Light of Its Sources.” \nAbstract: Du Châtelet’s Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du feu\, composed in 1737 for the 1738 prize competition of the Académie Royale des Sciences\, published in a collective volume in 1739\, republished by Du Châtelet in 1744\, is often mentioned but rarely commented on for its content. It is most often referred to as the first scientific essay written by a woman to be published by the Académie. While this gender history point is correct\, Du Châtelet’s actual ideas on fire tend to be overlooked. Notable exceptions are articles from Bernard Joly (2001) and Michael Veldman (2026). In my talk\, I will focus on the way Du Châtelet presents ongoing debates on the nature of fire by comparing experiments and conclusions drawn from them. Among her major sources we find Homberg\, Boyle\, Boerhaave\, and Musschenbroek. Newton’s Opticks and gravitation theory also influence her essay. The study of sources is\, however\, incomplete. For instance\, Du Châtelet seems to more often follow Boerhaave than she explicitly names him. Boerhaave is probably her indirect source to reconsider earlier alchemical and vitalist sources\, possibly Jean-Baptiste van Helmont. I will argue that Du Châtelet attempts to maintain results even when experiments and their implications contradict each other. I aim to show that\, even if her theory on fire cannot be considered a pivotal moment in physical chemistry\, her use of materialistic and theistic claims is original: fire is the Creator’s resource\, but it is of material nature at the same time. She reconciles the experimental method with some more ancient ideas on fire as a vital principle (spiritus vitae) and the soul of the world (anima mundi). \nAbout the speaker: Eszter Kovács is a postdoctoral researcher in the ERC project VERITRACE\, which was hosted between 2023 and 2026 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel\, and is currently hosted at FCiências.ID\, in Lisbon. Dr Kovács holds a joint PhD in French literature\, obtained in 2008 from the University of Szeged (Hungary) and the École normale supérieure de Lyon. She also holds a PhD in philosophy\, obtained in 2024\, from Eötvös Loránd University (Budapest\, Hungary). She specializes in Enlightenment thinkers Denis Diderot and Émilie Du Châtelet. Her research interests include early modern vitalism\, with a focus on Anne Conway. After co-authoring an article entitled “The notion of fire in the Chaldean Oracles”\, centred on the early modern reception of Neoplatonic and Stoic interpretations of fire as a universal agent\, she re-examined Du Châtelet’s Dissertation sur la nature et la propagation du feu\, which has led her to new insights in this work. \n  \nIf you want to participate or simply listen to the talks\, please contact: contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org

SUMMARY:Research Colloquium - Maxim Demin: Marie von Manassein (1841–1903): An Early Woman Philosopher of Mind
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists’ Research Colloquium in the Winter Semester 2026/27\, we are pleased to welcome Maxim Demin\, who will present his talk entitled “Marie von Manassein (1841–1903): An Early Woman Philosopher of Mind.” \nAbstract: Marie von Manassein is best known for her pioneering research on sleep deprivation. Working in St. Petersburg\, she published a landmark study in 1892\, later translated into French and English\, which became an important reference work in early European sleep science. She also claimed priority in the discovery of cell-free alcoholic fermentation\, publicly challenging Eduard Buchner in the 1890s. While Manassein has primarily been studied as a physiologist and experimental scientist\, the philosophical foundations of her work have received little attention. This paper argues that questions of consciousness\, free will\, and the relationship between mind and body formed the conceptual core of her intellectual project. I interpret her sleep experiments not simply as contributions to experimental physiology\, but as arguments against reductionist accounts of consciousness. The paper further examines her theory of psychological differentiation as the source of free will and situates it within fin de siècle debates on degeneration\, progress\, and human cultures. It also explores how her liberal individualism\, influenced by John Stuart Mill and Herbert Spencer\, coexisted with criticism of materialism\, support for the Russian monarchy\, and a defence of religious education. I argue that Manassein should be understood not only as a physician and experimental scientist\, but also as an early woman philosopher who combined research on the brain with a systematic investigation of consciousness. \n  \nAbout the speaker: Maxim Demin is a research fellow at the Ruhr University Bochum (Germany). His main interest is post-Hegelian philosophy and its intellectual development in German-speaking countries during the nineteenth century. Before moving to Bochum\, he taught for nearly a decade at the National Research University – Higher School of Economics (HSE) in St. Petersburg and Moscow\, offering courses in critical thinking\, philosophy of science\, metaethics\, and moral psychology. His current project explores Russian philosophical and public debates on the emergence of studies of human and animal psychology and mental phenomena\, tracing the transfer of psychological knowledge from the early nineteenth century to the early Soviet regime. \n  \nIf you want to participate or simply listen to the talks\, please contact: contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org

SUMMARY:Research Colloquium - Madeleine-Sophie Schmitz: Lou Andreas-Salomé on Subjectivity: Gendered Mediation of Essence\, Selfhood\, and Freedom.
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists’ Research Colloquium in the Winter Semester 2026/27\, we are pleased to welcome Madeleine-Sophie Schmitz (University of Vienna)\, who will present their talk entitled “Lou Andreas-Salomé on Subjectivity: Gendered Mediation of Essence\, Selfhood\, and Freedom.” \nAbstract: Madeleine will offer an overview of Lou Andreas-Salomé’s philosophy on gender and freedom\, presenting the beginning stages of their dissertation titled “Lou Andreas-Salomé on Subjectivity: Gendered Mediation of Essence\, Selfhood\, and Freedom.” This project reconstructs Lou Andreas-Salomé’s philosophy of gendered subjectivity\, arguing that essence\, selfhood\, and freedom constitute interdependent dimensions of a single account of subjectivity. While scholarship has begun to situate Salomé within the intellectual history of nineteenth-century women philosophers and has examined her contributions to questions of life\, self-development\, gender\, and psychoanalysis\, no systematic reconstruction and philosophical discussion of her account of subjectivity exists to date. The project’s primary aim is to address this gap by examining how Salomé conceptualizes the subject as an embodied\, affective\, gendered\, and dynamically developing unity rather than as an abstract or gender-neutral rational agent. The project focuses on three interconnected problems. First\, it reconstructs Salomé’s philosophy of gender\, arguing that gender functions neither as a fixed biological determinant nor as a merely socially constructed identity\, but as a constitutive and transformable structure mediating embodiment\, affectivity\, and experience. Second\, it reconstructs her account of essence and selfhood\, showing how the unity of the self is maintained through processes of differentiation\, tension\, reflection\, and development. On this interpretation\, essence is neither a static substance nor a purely formal condition\, but an immanent and processual ground of embodied selfhood. Third\, the project examines Salomé’s conception of freedom\, arguing that agency does not consist in escaping the conditions that constitute the subject\, but in the capacity to inhabit\, negotiate\, and transform them. \n  \nAbout the speaker: Madeleine Schmitz earned their BA and MA in Philosophy from The William H. Miller III Department of Philosophy at Johns Hopkins University\, where they also earned a BA in English. Recently\, they were a Lecturer in the Modern Languages and Linguistics Department at the University of Limerick\, teaching upper-level German literature and philosophy courses. Currently\, they serve as the research assistant on the DAAD-funded Project titled “European Societal Challenges in German Culture: Exploring Aging and Climate Change in Tandem” in addition to beginning their PhD in Philosophy at the University of Vienna. Madeleine works primarily on 19th- and early 20th-century German women philosophers\, but also more broadly on German Idealism\, Feminist Philosophy\, and History of Philosophy. \n  \nIf you want to participate or simply listen to the talks\, please contact: contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org

SUMMARY:Research Colloquium - Jil Muller: Maternal Bodies and Generative Fluids in Oliva Sabuco
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists’ Research Colloquium in the Winter Semester 2026/27\, we are pleased to welcome Jil Muller\, who will present her talk entitled “Maternal Bodies and Generative Fluids in Oliva Sabuco.” \nAbstract: This presentation explores the understanding of the female body in the work of Oliva Sabuco\, focusing on her theories of procreation and breastfeeding. Particular attention will be given to Sabuco’s reinterpretation of the “cold” female body\, traditionally associated in early modern medicine with weakness and passivity. Drawing on Galenic\, Hippocratic\, and Avicennian traditions\, Sabuco adopted the two-seeds model of generation\, granting women an active and necessary role in conception. Female semen\, understood as transformed chilo and characterized by coldness and humidity\, becomes a productive force essential to the creation of life. At the same time\, Sabuco balances this principle of coldness with the vital heat associated with blood and menstruation\, presenting generation as the result of bodily equilibrium. The presentation also examines her understanding of breastfeeding\, in which breastmilk functions not only as nourishment but as a determinant of the child’s physical and psychological development\, thereby assigning mothers a central ethical and social responsibility \n  \nAbout the speaker: Jil Muller is Deputy Head of the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists and Postdocoral Researcher in philosophy at the University of Paderborn\, Germany. Her research is twofold: on the one hand\, she is interested in the medical traditions of 16th and 17th century philosophers and scientists and their understanding of the body\, mechanism and humourism\, with a particular focus on women thinkers. She has published articles on Descartes’ physiology and anatomy\, on his correspondence with Elisabeth of Bohemia\, on Montaigne’s illness and on Oliva Sabuco’s holism. On the other hand\, she is working on the moral theories of women philosophers and scientists of the early modern period\, such as Marie de Gournay\, Sophie Germain and Émilie du Châtelet. She recently has edited three books: Women and their Body (de Gruyter 2025)\, Automata\, Cyborgs and Mutants: Eccentric Bodies from Humanism to Transhumanism (Palgrave Macmillan 2026) and Food\, Plants\, Remedies and Healing Practices: Women’s Ideas in the History of Medicine (Springer Nature 2026). \n  \nIf you want to participate or simply listen to the talks\, please contact: contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org
