DESCRIPTION:TALK | February 12\, 2021 | 2:30 PM (Atlantic Time Canada)\n\n\nTom Vinci (Dalhousie University): “Proposal for a New Theory of Environmental Direct Realism : Anne Conway\, Quantum Mechanics and the Extromissive Theory of Perception.”\n\n\nAbstract\n\n\nThe philosophical backstory is that perception verbs are to be understood as reporting the presence of an object to a subject. This view is standard in the Early Modern period and is making a comeback\, e.g. in Brewer 2018. Our question is: How do we integrate the idea of presence-to-a-subject into the existing science of the day? According to Anne Conway\, writing circa 1670\, we can’t. Since we do have to fit the account into science\, we need to change the science. She looks to the (ancient) extromissive theory of perception to do this. This is the project that I propose to reconstruct in the modern day with the aid of Quantum Mechanics.\nThe reconstruction has four main objectives. (1) To show how\, in principle\, we might construct a modern theory of perception that fits the mathematical and physical structure of Quantum Mechanics. (2) To show that perception\, thus understood\, can be understood as a theory of perceptual presence. (3) To show that a causal concept in Conway’s physics\, the notion of intimate presence\, has the causal properties of Quantum Entanglement. Hagengruber\, is inviting Project Vox to celebrate Émilie du Châtelet’s 314th Birthday – Come and join us! \nAndrew Janiak is joining us online from Duke University and will present his new work exploring the philosophical originality of Du Châtelet’s “Institutions”. Andrew Janiak is Professor of Philosophy at Duke University. He is the co-leader of Project Vox – a project aimed at highlighting the work of Early Modern Women Philosophers. He is currently working on a multi-year project on Émilie Du Châtelet’s philosophy and 18th century Newtonian thought in France\, together with Prof. Karen Detlefsen (Penn). \nClara Carus (HWPS) will be giving a talk on the Principle of Contradiction in Du Châtelet. In celebration of her birthday the talk is dedicated to the exploration of this important aspect of her work. \nThe event is coordinated by the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists directed by Ruth E. SUMMARY:St Petersburg Manuscripts: The First Digital and the First Historical-Critical Edition of Émilie Du Châtelet's Early Works
DESCRIPTION:In a collaborative project of the National Library of Russia\, Saint Petersburg\, Russia\, the  Centre international d’étude du XVIIIe siècle\, France and the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists\, Germany\, present the first digital and the first critical edition of the Émilie Du Châtelet manuscripts.  A special focus of the center lies in exploring the writings of philosopher\, mathematician and physicist Émilie Du Châtelet. Newton and Leibniz defined the controversy of her era. Du Châtelet integrated both perspectives and created a new path in philosophy. Her philosophy of nature was immediately translated into German in 1743. SUMMARY:Women Philosophers in South-Eastern Europe – Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:The Research Center for Women in Philosophy organizes a conference under the title: Women Philosophers in South-Eastern Europe – Past\, Present and Future. The goal of the conference is to gather and exchange information on past and present women philosophers in South-Eastern Europe as well as future perspectives of women in philosophy in this region. There are two premises of the conference. The first is that while the research on women philosophers of the rest of Europe has been under way in the last few decades – or at least there is a significant growth in number and quality of scholarly texts on British\, French\, German\, Italian etc. women philosophers –\, there is little scholarly information on women philosophers of South-Eastern Europe. The second is that there is relatively little contact and mutual collaboration between presently active South-East European women philosophers as well as researchers on gender philosophy and gender-aware history of philosophy of the region.With these challenges in mind\, possible topics would include the following themes: \n\nthe situation with women philosophers in your country in the past:\n\nhow many women philosophers were there in the past\, their works\, activities etc.\none particular woman philosopher of the past who stands out;\n\n\nthe situation with women philosophers in your country now:\n\nwhat is the overall situation with professional (and amateur) women philosophers in your country nowadays;\nwhat is the situation with gender studies and feminist theories in your country;\n\n\nwhat are the expectations for the future)\, are women promoted to study humanities/philosophy\, etc.? how does the job market for women philosophers in your country look like?\n\nWe are open to different ideas and formats. DESCRIPTION:Manfred Zahn hat immer wieder sein Erstaunen darüber geäußert\, dass die für Kant so wichtige Eberhard-Debatte in der Forschung so wenig Aufmerksamkeit erhielt. Eberhards Interpretation\, Kants kritische Wende auf die Leibniz-Wolff’sche Philosophie zurückzuführen\, war nicht ausreichend überzeugend. Die seit Jahren an Fahrt gewinnende Erforschung der Schriften der in Deutschland intensiv rezipierten französischen Philosophin und Mathematikerin Emilie Du Châtelet (1706-1749) wirft nun ein neues Licht auf diese Debatte. Emilie Du Châtelet ist ein wichtiges Glied in der Rezeptionskette für Kant. Zudem verweist Eberhard an einer entscheidenden Stelle auf diese Philosophin. Der Vortrag führt in die Debatte ein und zeigt\, wie nahe Du Châtelet Philosophie von den Erscheinungen der Kantischen kritischen Wende steht. Erläutert werden zudem die Hintergründe der lebenslangen Auseinandersetzung Kants mit den Schriften Du Châtelet‘s. \nProf. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber ist Fachleiterin und Inhaberin des Lehrstuhls für Philosophie an der Universität Paderborn. Sie habilitierte 1998 mit einer wirtschaftsphilosophischen Arbeit\, die von Kants praktischer Philosophie ausgeht (Nutzen und Allgemeinheit\, 2000). DESCRIPTION:IV Eroticism and Philosophy\nBetween Traces and Erasures – The Erotic in Feminist Philosophy.\nOnline Talk and Discussion with Georgia Amitrano. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2014\, to celebrate 5 years of the philosophy course at the Regional Goiás-UFG\, the first event called “Eroticism and Philosophy” was held and and takes place every 2 years. In the past three editions\, people from different places in Brazil went to the city of Goiás to hold and participate in lectures\, communications\, short courses and artistic exhibitions. The “IV Eroticism and Philosophy” will be no different and will include the presence of philosophers from different Brazilian states\, who will unite especially to think about decolonial issues\, about the body and about language. In addition\, we will have a discussion table with components from two feminist projects: GSEX (UFG) and LEA (UFU)\, with the purpose of increasing the interaction between students from both institutions. \nWe hope to be able to collaborate so that the diversity of projects increases and seeks to resemble the diversity present in urban spaces\, making this characteristic the keynote of a plural\, free city with equal opportunities for all regardless of gender\, religion\, color or age.

Congress of the German Society for Philosophy on “The True\, the Good\, and the Beautiful” will take place at Friedrich-Alexander-University Erlangen-Nürnberg. The congress examines the true\, the good\, and the beautiful in two respects: its intersections and its unity. The conference provides the opportunity to present research from all parts of philosophy: in 40 sections there will be talks about virtually all fields and periods of philosophy. The section talks will take place in afternoon sessions (1 p.m. to 4 p.m.) over the course of the three conference days. They will be selected from submissions to a call for papers through a blind review process. Submission deadline is December 1\, 2019. The time slots for section talks will be 35 minutes\, with 20 – 25 minutes for the presentation and the remainder for discussion. Contributions in English and German are welcome. The sections are divided along historic\, systematic and regional dimensions. Section 15 of the congress is the “History of Women in Philosophy”\, a research area that has gained international recognition in recent years. Everyone interested in the history of women philosophers is welcome to make a contribution to this section. There will also be a meeting of the Work Group Women in the History of Philosophy (AG Frauen in der Geschichte der Philosophie) of the German Society for Philosophy on September 21\, 2020. DESCRIPTION:Keynote Speakers: Prof. Anneliese Meis Wörmer (Pontifical University of Chile in Santiago de Chile) and Prof. Andreas Speer (Universität zu Köln)\nEdith Stein’s (1891–1942) philosophical life followed an intellectual itinerary that started with the thought of Edmund Husserl and phenomenology; it then turned to Christian philosophy and\, ultimately\, to Carmelite spirituality. The International Association for the Study of the Philosophy of Edith Stein (IASPES) invites submissions that explore Stein’s philosophical corpus from the three aforementioned periods. We welcome papers that discuss the relationships between the various moments of Stein’s intellectual life. We encourage submissions addressing various issues\, ideas\, claims\, and arguments from these three areas of Stein’s thought\, including the relation between her philosophy and that of her fellow phenomenologists (Husserl\, Conrad-Martius\, Reinach\, Scheler\, Ingarden\, Walther\, von Hildebrand\, etc.); debates around the nature and content of Christian philosophy; issues in Christian philosophy; a discussion of how Carmelite spirituality influenced andshaped Stein’s later philosophy; and Stein’s relation to figures like Martin Grabmann\, Daniel Feuling\,OSB\, Peter Wust\, Rudolf Otto\, Erik Peterson\, or Erich Przywara\, SJ. DESCRIPTION:Please also visit our Libori Summer School 2019 webpage. \n____________________________________________________ \nThe Libori Summer School 2019 at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists will focus on “Teaching Women Philosophers.” This year\, two parallel Libori Summer Schools will be run\, one in English and one in German language (see the German information below).  \nOur invited guests for the English section are: Sarah Hutton (University of York\, UK)\, Sabrina Ebbersmeyer (University of Copenhagen\, Denmark)\, Ronny Miron (Bar-Ilan University\, Israel)\, Luka  Boršić and Ivana Skuhala Karasman (University of Zagreb\, Croatia)\, and Antonio Calcagno\, (King’s University College\, Canada). \nCall for Papers for this section is closed since May 5\, 2019. For information about the program\, visit our newsletter or follow our announcements on Twitter/Facebook.  \nThe German Libori Summer School 2019 is held in cooperation with the Work Group/AG Frauen in der Geschichte der Philosophie.  In this section\, Sabrina Ebbersmeyer (University of Copenhagen)\, Janelle Pötzsch\, Maria Robaszkiewicz\, Julia Mühl\, Jessica Harmening\, Rebekka Böhme\, and Ruth Hagengruber (all from Paderborn University) will present selected examples. \nThe speaker will offer text interpretations from: Elisabeth of Bohemia\, Anne Conway\, Émilie Du Châtelet\, Harriet Taylor Mill\, Charlotte Perkins Gilman\, Helene Druskowitz\, Gerda Walther\, Hedwig Conrad-Martius\, Edith Stein\, and Hannah Arendt. \nThe event will start on Monday\, July 29\, 2019 at 9:30 a.m. with an opening lecture by  Ruth Hagengruber. \nThe Libori Summer School will end on Friday August 2\, 2019 at 6:00 p.m. with a closing ceremony that includes the presentation of the certificates to the registered participants and the award of the Elisabeth of Bohemia Prize 2019. \nA registration is required. SUMMARY:I. International Conference Women in Modern Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:The First International Conference on Women of Modern Philosophy will be held in Rio de Janeiro\, 17th to 20th June 2019). \nRio de Janeiro is a national center of Early Modern Philosophy. All Brazilian researchers who confirmed participation in the meeting are heirs of that school of reading the history of philosophy with a method of conceptual analysis\, with deep respect to the letter of the historical text. It will be a joyous occasion for the beginning of an exchange and network on Early Moderh Philosophy’s research with an eye to the rewriting of the philosophical canon. \nThe meeting is already on its preliminary arrangements. DESCRIPTION:Peter Singer at Paderborn University! \nColloquium | June 17\, 2019 | 8 pm – 10 pm | Paderborn University \nPeter Singer\, famous professor of ethics from the University of Melbourne\, is coming to Paderborn University. Tonight\, he will hold a talk about „Animal Liberation – Where are we today?” that is open for everyone interested. Tomorrow\, there will be panel discussions on his theories of utilitarianism and animal ethics that are only accessible with prior registration and are fully booked. Peter Singer specializes in applied ethics and bioethics and he approaches ethical issues from a utilitarian perspective. He also applies his utilitarian views to animal ethics. Singer is known in particular for his book Animal Liberation (1975)\, in which he argues in favour of veganism\, and Practical Ethics (1979)\, in which he analyzes why and how the interests of human and non-human animals should be weighed. Singer’s position that challenges the sanctity of life and argues for abortion rights has many vehement opponents and he has even been disinvited from speaking at German universities due to his controversial claims\, but he will speak at Paderborn University tonight!
