DESCRIPTION:Andrew Janiak\, Professor of Philosophy\, Chair of the Department (Duke University)\, and the co-leader of  Project Vox \, visits the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists. \nBoth projects focus on  texts written by women philosophers that have been neglected or ignored in the mainstream narratives of the history of philosophy. Project Vox‘s research focuses on the early modern women philosophers: et al. Mary Astell\, Margaret Cavendish\, Anne Conway and Émilie Du Châtelet. \nAndrew Janiak’s visit will be a welcome occasion to discuss the research in this academic field.

SUMMARY:Karen Green - "Catharine Macaulay\, Brissot de Warville\, and the History of England in the French Revolution"
DESCRIPTION:In 1785 Jacques-Pierre Brissot de Warville was in London\, attempting to set up a society and journal to encourage cross-channel literary and political communication. His efforts resulted in the production of a few issues of the Lycee de Londres. He reported that in England he gained little support or encouragement\, except from Catharine Macaulay. In this paper I examine their friendship\, and explore the influence of Macaulay’s account of the seventeenth-century English Revolution on ‘patriots’ and others\, in France\, prior to and during the French Revolution. \nProf. Dr. Karen Green (University of Melbourne) is giving her talk as part of the Research Colloquium “History of Women Philosophers” at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists (Paderborn University).

SUMMARY:Fourth Annual Conference by Women in Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:For the fourth year in a row\, the Conference by Women in Philosophy will be held in Amsterdam. This year’s conference will take place on Monday July 3rd\, 2017 at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. The goal of the conference is to provide a platform for undergraduate and graduate women philosophers to present their work to their peers. In this way we hope to create an opportunity for young women philosophers to inspire and motivate one another and to forge potentially productive alliances. The conference features a plenary discussion with a keynote speaker (t.b.a.) about the position of women in philosophy\, as well as workshops on academic skills. \nIn the Netherlands\, like in the rest of the world\, women are underrepresented in academic philosophy. Being young women ourselves\, we want to challenge this situation – whilst being aware of the fact that the marginal positioning of women in philosophy also depends on factors other than their sex\, like ethnicity\, religion\, social status\, disability or sexual orientation. We are committed to creating a more balanced environment and to empowering (those identifying as) women to make the academic space their own. \nWe therefore invite (those identifying as) women philosophers (BA\, MA\, PhD\, recent alumnae) to send in abstracts for paper presentations in any area of philosophy. We will accept a maximum of approximately 20 papers. SUMMARY:Giving Life to Politics - The Work of Adriana Cavarero
DESCRIPTION:This three-day conference is a sustained engagement with\, and celebration of\, the life work of Italian feminist philosopher Adriana Cavarero. It also marks the publication of her most recent text “Inclinations: A Critique od Rectitude” (Stanford University Press\, 2016). \nKeynote speakers: \nJudith Butler \nUniversity of California\, Berkeley \nAdriana Cavarero \nUniversità degli Studi di Verona \nBonnie Honig \nBrown University \nAdriana Cavarero has been at the forefront of continental feminist philosophy for the past four decades\, working in the interstices of sexual difference theory\, post-structuralism\, political philosophy\, literature and classical thought. Her books have addressed a range of themes\, including feminist political philosophy (In Spite of Plato\, 1995; Stately Bodies\, 2002)\, narrativity (Relating Narratives\, 2000)\, the voice and vocality (For More than One Voice\, 2005)\, and contemporary forms of violence (Horrorism\, 2009). Common to all of Cavarero’s work is an extension of Hannah Arendt’s conceptualisation of uniqueness\, an insistence on the vulnerability of the human condition\, and an immanent critique of western metaphysics. \nCFP: Abstracts of up to 500 words which respond to any aspect of Cavarero’s work should be submitted by no later than 28th February 2017 to Ian Sinclair: I.A.Sinclair@brighton.ac.uk. There are however a limited number of places at this conference. We will prioritise abstracts as they arrive. \nThe University of Brighton’s City Campus is in the centre of Brighton\, a ten minute walk from Brighton railway station. Brighton is thirty minutes by train from Gatwick Airport and around an hour from central London. The campus is near many hotels\, guest houses\, restaurants\, bars and pubs. Brighton and Hove is a major tourist destination in the south-east of England. Consider staying longer to see more of the city if you are able to.

DESCRIPTION:The University of Haifa (Israel) is pleased to host the 24th International Conference of the Simone de Beauvoir Society “Simone de Beauvoir’s Feminism(s)”. Keynote speakers are Prof. Bauer\, Prof. Bergoffen and Prof. Weiss. \nThe influence of Simone de Beauvoir’s thought on Feminism and Feminist Theory is indisputable. Beauvoir’s The Second Sex is unanimously recognized as one of the main pillars of feminist thought and as a major work of the 20th Century. The Second Sex has informed both feminist thought and feminist political struggle and activism. \nBeauvoir’s feminism is nevertheless not only reflected through The Second Sex\, but also through other philosophical and theoretical books and papers\, short essays as well as her fiction and literary works. Thus\, we might ask: What kind of feminism does Beauvoir advocate? Or\, are there in fact many “Beauvoir’s feminisms”? How are these feminisms connected to other both past and contemporary feminist ideas and feminist struggles? \nThe 24th International Conference of the Simone de Beauvoir Society will take place at the University of Haifa\, Israel\, from June 19-21\, 2017\, hosted by the Women’s and Gender Studies Graduate Program in collaboration with the Philosophy Department. We welcome submissions on Beauvoir’s life and works from a broad range of disciplines. The keynote will be delivered by Prof. Susanne Kord. \nKeynote Speaker: Professor Susanne Kord (Chair of German\, University College London) \nWe are delighted to invite proposals for papers offering new approaches female authorship and identity in the long eighteenth century. Since the 1970s\, feminist criticism has rediscovered a vast body of literary works by eighteenth-century women and uncovered a great deal about the diverse roles that women played in eighteenth-century society and culture\, as authors\, actresses\, translators\, and public figures. Studies of women’s writing have challenged our understandings of genre\, periodisation\, and authorship\, and gender has become an integral part of any discussion of individual identity. \nOrganised by Romanticism and Eighteenth-Century Studies Oxford (RECSO) and the Oxford Research Centre in the Humanities (TORCH)\, this conference aims to take stock after fifty years of important scholarship and to seek out exciting new methodologies for researching women’s writing and identities in the long eighteenth century (c. 1680-c. 1820). DESCRIPTION:The Fourth Bi-Annual International Conference: Applications & Implications – Ethics and Metaphysics in Edith Stein’s Philosophy will be presented by the International Association for the Study of the Philosophy of Edith Stein\, in collaboration with the University of Portland (USA)\, and the McNerney-Hanson Endowed Chair in Ethics. \nSpeakers: Sarah Borden Sharkey (Wheaton College)\, Michael F. Andrews (University of Portland)\, Christof Betschart (University of Fribourg\, Switzerland) and Suzanne M. Batzdorff \nEdith Stein (1891–1942) never wrote a formal work of ethics\, yet her philosophical corpus\, especially her metaphysics\, contains a plethora of ethical resources and ideas that can be mined to address various questions\, themes or positions in contemporary ethics and metaphysics\, including the relationship between the good and being\, evil\, limits\, judgement\, responsibility\, personal identity\, collective versus individual action and responsibility\, moral guilt\, and intention. Given the richness of Stein’s ideas\, can her ethical insights be brought to bear on contemporary issues and ethical dilemmas? How would Stein respond to various ethical problems raised by dominant ethical schools\, including utilitarianism\, deontology\, virtue ethics\, pragmatism\,and existentialism? Are there possible practical applications of Stein’s metaphysicsand ethics to contemporary society? The International Association for the Study of the Philosophy of Edith Stein (IASPES) in collaboration with the University of Portlandand and the McNerney-Hanson Chair in Ethics invites abstracts (250 words maximum) dealing with the aforementioned theme. We also invite abstracts on any aspect of Stein’s philosophy.

SUMMARY:Changing the Nature of Art and Science - Intersections with Maria Sibylla Merian
DESCRIPTION:Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717) is one of the more intriguing figures of scientific\, artistic and commercial culture of the early modern period. Born in Frankfurt\, and later based in Nuremberg\, Wieuwerd and Amsterdam\, her scientific interest in entomology eventually led her to Surinam\, where\, as in Europe\, she studied the metamorphoses of insects in their natural habitat. She translated her minute observations into powerful artistic representations that still attract the attention of many scholars\, such as biologists\, art historians and science historians. Modern artists and novelists also find inspiration in her work and life. In commemoration of her death three hundred years ago the Maria Sibylla Merian Society in cooperation with the Artis Academy\, the University of Amsterdam and the Artis Library will organize an international conference in the Royal Tropical Institute and the Artis Zoo in Amsterdam on 7\, 8 and 9 June 2017. The aim of the conference is to bring together new research and projects relating to Maria Sibylla Merian. With her life and work as a focal point\, this conference will also discuss topics that relate to Merian from a broader perspective.

SUMMARY:An Imaginary Conversation Between Margaret Cavendish and Virginia Woolf
DESCRIPTION:A special public\, script-in-hand performance offered in conjunction with the Nicosia Medieval Festival 2017\, at CVAR Ermou Street\, Niscosia\, Cyrpus\, as part of Othello’s Island 2017 – the Annual Conference on Medieval and Early Modern Studies. In this premiere\, semi-performed reading of a new play by Jim Fitzmaurice\, we are asked to imagine an impossible meeting. Two women writers – both notorious in their day\, but separated by over two hundred years – finally chance upon one another at the Bahtezar Cafe in CVAR. \nThis brief performance creates an imaginary conversation\, both serious and comic\, between Margaret Cavendish\, a prolific Early Modern woman writer\, and Virginia Woolf\, the famous novelist who ridiculed Cavendish in “The Common Reader” (1929). Woolf was fascinated by Cavendish\, and the ridicule seems to have hidden a strong affinity felt by Woolf for Cavendish. The two talk philosophy and what might be called “the nature of nature”. For Cavendish\, the Goddess Natura was all important. Along the way\, she and Woolf also get up to high jinks with Sir Constantijn Huygens\, John Evelyn\, and other 17th century intellectuals.\nActors and stage crew will include students from the University of Sheffield and Sheffield Hallam University.

More gender-conscious conceptions of humans have modified and enriched traditional philosophical ideas about epistemic\, ethical and political subjects\, and our understanding of the past of philosophy has been improved by recent scholarship on women in the history of philosophy. However\, the transformative potential of feminist philosophy for renewing the discipline in terms of canon\, concepts\, histories\, institutional cultures\, content\, and plurality of styles has not yet been actualized. The feminist utopias envisioned by feminist philosophers across traditional philosophical divides and cultures possess the potential for invigorating philosophy and bringing it back to basic questions of philosophy born out of wonder or frustration. Such utopias are not idealistic but represent our striving for a more realistic grasp of who we are and how we experience the world. The inherent tension between the particular and the universal\, the private and the public\, so strongly debated within feminist philosophy is a resource for disclosing new philosophical futures.\nOver the course of four days we will explore these themes together. The first day will be spent at the University of Iceland in Reykjavík where we will listen to keynote speakers in an open conference. In the evening we leave for Skálholt which is a beautiful historic place in the south of Iceland\, about an hour’s drive from Reykjavík. In Skálholt we will have a three-day workshop with paper presentations and discussion sessions.\nThe symposium provides a space for theoretical experimentation and cross-fertilization of methodologies and ideas. It aims to develop insights that could be used for further research within philosophy\, literature\, history of ideas and related areas. DESCRIPTION:As part of the project Bridging the Gender Gap through Time: How Women Philosophers of the Past have Contributed to Today’s Thought\, Dr. Sandrine Bergès (Bilkent University) gives a talk on the French female philosopher Olympe de Gouges at King’s College London: “Uneducated nature and epistemic authority: how to talk about Olympe de Gouges in philosophy class”. \nLocation: room SW1.17 (Ante Room)\, Somerset House East Wing\, The Dickson Poon School of Law\, King’s College London\, Strand\, WC2R 2LS. \nUnlike her contemporary Mary Wollstonecraft\, Olympe de Gouges valued nature over education. Nature unimpeded\, she argued\, is always good and can serve as a reliable moral guide even for those who are educated. Education\, on the other hand\, corrupts nature. Gouges made this point both by putting herself forward as an uneducated citizen who benefits society\, and by showing how privileging education over nature resulted in severe injustice being perpetrated and against enslaved African people and women. \nEmphasising the fact that women’s philosophical writing is often to be found in non-traditional genres\, I use a variety of texts from her theatre\, political tracts as well as a philosophical discourse to show how Gouges develops this argument and applied it to topics such as women’s condition and slavery. \nAll are very welcome\, including research students interested in learning more about how to publish on the history of women thinkers.

SUMMARY:Between HeForShe and Misogyny
DESCRIPTION:The HeForShe campaign of the UN sets a historical milestone in the fight for gender equality. The inclusion of men and boys in a movement that once began as women’s fight for human rights shows a fundamental change in the mindset of people: gender equality effects everyone and is in the interest of both\, men and women. \nAt the same time\, however\, as seen in the US presidential election campaign with the “Grab them by the pussy” scandal\, those opposed to gender equality initiated a counter movement that tries to undermine the rising solidarity between men and women. As a consequence\, the movement for gender equality is now facing an unprecedented wave of misogyny. \nOn international women’s day students of the project seminar “Philosophische Geschlechtertheorien” at the University Paderborn present this actual clash of the extremes in a panel discussion.

DESCRIPTION:The Verein für Herforder Geschichte e.V.\, in cooperation with the VHS Herford\, cordially invites you to Dr. Andrea Reichenberger’s talk “On God and Formal Logic” on Elisabeth of Herford’s correspondence with the philosophers of her time. \nElisabeth\, Princess of Herford (1618-1680)\, was a prominent figure in her time as the daughter of the Palatine Elector and Bohemian Winter King Frederick V\, and granddaughter of the English King James I. René Descartes\, with whom Elisabeth had a close friendship\, did not accidentally dedicate his work to her. Elisabeth also had close contacts with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz\, Anna Maria van Schurman and other scholars. \nIn 2018 Elisabeth von der Pfalz would have celebrate her 400th birthday. SUMMARY:Rebecca Grotjahn and Ruth Hagengruber - "Luise Gottsched"
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Bach had an Enkelschülerin? Luise Adelgunde Victoria Gottsched (1713-1762) was a universal scholar: a philosopher\, a writer\, a linguistic genius\, and a pianist. When she came to Leipzig in 1735\, freshly married to Johann Christoph Gottsched\, a professor of poetics at the university\, there was only one thing she could not do: composing\, since it wasn`t part of the education program of the daughter of a doctor from Danzig. Thus\, the “Gottschedin” took lessons with Johann Ludwig Krebs\, one of the most talented pupils of Johann Sebastian Bach. \nIn the lecture series “Mein Lieblingsstück – Musikwissenschaft und ihr Innerstes (My Favorite Piece – Musicology and its Inner Essence)”\, one of their works will be presented on Wednesday\, January 11th: “Seyd gegrüßt\, ihr schönen”\, a “Cantate zum Singen bey dem Clavier”. The piece shows not only the musical talent of the composer\, but is also an example of the culture of the Early Enlightenment\, which had a center in Leipzig. The role played by learned women like Luise Gottsched in this world and the influence they had in their time will be explained by Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber\, professor of philosophy at the Paderborn University. The cantata of Prof. Dr. Rebecca Grotjahn\, professor at the musicological seminar Detmold / Paderborn will be presented musically\, with the support of the pianist Kostadin Delinikolov. \n“Aus deinen aufgeklärten Blicken strahlt mir ein ganzes” – a cantata of the philosopher and Bach`s Enkelschülerin\, Luise Victoria Adelgunde Gottsched. \nLecture with music by Prof. Dr. Rebecca Grotjahn and Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber\, within the framework of the lecture series “Mein Lieblingsstück – Musikwissenschaft und ihr Innerstes”.
