SUMMARY:Between HeForShe and Misogyny
DESCRIPTION:The HeForShe campaign of the UN sets a historical milestone in the fight for gender equality. The inclusion of men and boys in a movement that once began as women’s fight for human rights shows a fundamental change in the mindset of people: gender equality effects everyone and is in the interest of both\, men and women. \nAt the same time\, however\, as seen in the US presidential election campaign with the “Grab them by the pussy” scandal\, those opposed to gender equality initiated a counter movement that tries to undermine the rising solidarity between men and women. As a consequence\, the movement for gender equality is now facing an unprecedented wave of misogyny. \nOn international women’s day students of the project seminar “Philosophische Geschlechtertheorien” at the University Paderborn present this actual clash of the extremes in a panel discussion.

DESCRIPTION:The Verein für Herforder Geschichte e.V.\, in cooperation with the VHS Herford\, cordially invites you to Dr. Andrea Reichenberger’s talk “On God and Formal Logic” on Elisabeth of Herford’s correspondence with the philosophers of her time. \nElisabeth\, Princess of Herford (1618-1680)\, was a prominent figure in her time as the daughter of the Palatine Elector and Bohemian Winter King Frederick V\, and granddaughter of the English King James I. René Descartes\, with whom Elisabeth had a close friendship\, did not accidentally dedicate his work to her. Elisabeth also had close contacts with Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz\, Anna Maria van Schurman and other scholars. \nIn 2018 Elisabeth von der Pfalz would have celebrate her 400th birthday. DESCRIPTION:Did you know that Bach had an Enkelschülerin? Luise Adelgunde Victoria Gottsched (1713-1762) was a universal scholar: a philosopher\, a writer\, a linguistic genius\, and a pianist. When she came to Leipzig in 1735\, freshly married to Johann Christoph Gottsched\, a professor of poetics at the university\, there was only one thing she could not do: composing\, since it wasn`t part of the education program of the daughter of a doctor from Danzig. Thus\, the “Gottschedin” took lessons with Johann Ludwig Krebs\, one of the most talented pupils of Johann Sebastian Bach. \nIn the lecture series “Mein Lieblingsstück – Musikwissenschaft und ihr Innerstes (My Favorite Piece – Musicology and its Inner Essence)”\, one of their works will be presented on Wednesday\, January 11th: “Seyd gegrüßt\, ihr schönen”\, a “Cantate zum Singen bey dem Clavier”. The piece shows not only the musical talent of the composer\, but is also an example of the culture of the Early Enlightenment\, which had a center in Leipzig. The role played by learned women like Luise Gottsched in this world and the influence they had in their time will be explained by Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber\, professor of philosophy at the Paderborn University. The cantata of Prof. Dr. Rebecca Grotjahn\, professor at the musicological seminar Detmold / Paderborn will be presented musically\, with the support of the pianist Kostadin Delinikolov. \n“Aus deinen aufgeklärten Blicken strahlt mir ein ganzes” – a cantata of the philosopher and Bach`s Enkelschülerin\, Luise Victoria Adelgunde Gottsched. \nLecture with music by Prof. Dr. Rebecca Grotjahn and Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber\, within the framework of the lecture series “Mein Lieblingsstück – Musikwissenschaft und ihr Innerstes”.

DESCRIPTION:The Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists at Paderborn University presents a round-table discussion in honor of the 310th anniversary of Émilie Du Châtelet`s birthday. Stefanie Ertz and Ansgar Lyssy will give a talk. \nStefanie Ertz (Berlin Brandenburg Academy of Sciences) will present her research on Émilie Du Châtelet’s Grammaire raisonné. Stefanie Ertz\, former research assistant in the project of the Leibniz Edition Potsdam\, is an expert on natural law in Early Modern Europe and on the reception of Port-Royal Logic. \nAnsgar Lyssy (Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich) talks about the transformation of the principle of the least action from a metaphysical to a physical principle in the first half of the 18th century. Ansgar Lyssy has written his PhD thesis on “Kausalität und Teleologie bei G. W. Leibniz (Causality and Teleology in G. W. Leibniz)” and is currently focusing on the concept of mankind in the philosophy of the German Enlightenment. \nThe importance of Émilie Du Châtelet with regard to the philosophical debate on the principle of the least action\, as well as for the history of reception of Port-Royal Logic\, is a terra incognita of the Du Châtelet-research.\nAll interested parties are welcome. DESCRIPTION:Émilie du Châtelet: Balancing the Plenum and the Void\nAbstract: The struggle to grasp the metaphysical foundation of the natural world was most intense when Émilie du Châtelet (1706–1749) entered the philosophical scene. Voltaire derided Descartes’ mechanist view of the world\, which was filled with vortices\, and Newton posited occult forces that moved the planets in the void. The explanation of motion\, from where it came and how it could be explained\, stoked the debate while advancing the limits of our knowledge of the natural world. \nRejecting the ill-conceived ideas of Cartesian intuitionism and criticizing John Locke’s “muddled” ontology\, du Châtelet presented in her discussion of the foundations of physics a model of constructive reasoning\, which provided an understanding of how the notion of space emerged and how matter related to processes of abstraction. Furthermore\, she argued that her model was compatible with the claim of the invariability of force in the universe. \nThis talk introduces the work of du Châtelet and focusses on the metaphysical debates surrounding the possible ground of natural philosophy as well as the nature of movement. During her lifetime\, the Foundation of Physics was translated into several languages and was included in the canon of the most important books of her age. Kant wrote his first publication on her dispute with the secretary of the French Academy on the vis viva. Her definitions of “space” and “hypothesis” were extensively copied\, for example\, in the Encyclopedia of Diderot and D’Alembert. Du Châtelet was an influential figure in the Leibniz-Newton debates about nature\, and she was an inspiring philosopher to her contemporaries.

SUMMARY:Luka Boršić and Ivana Skuhala Karasman - "Helene von Druskowitz and the Position of Women in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy"
DESCRIPTION:The lecture will consist of two parts: in the first part we will give the outline of life and philosophy of Helene von Druskowitz (1856 – 1918). In I878 she was promoted with a thesis Don Juan in Lord Byron which made her the second German-speaking women to receive a PhD title. Throughout her life she developed ever more radical form of feminism which culminated with her book Der Mann als logische und sittliche Unmöglichkeit und als Fluch der Welt. Pessimistische Kardinalsätze\, published in 1905. We will also concentrate on her sharp criticism of religion which shows similarities with another fighter for emancipation of women in the Austro-Hunagarian Monarchy\, the Slovenian-born writer and journalist – Zofka Kveder (1878 – 1926). In the second we will show the position of women in the Austro-Hunagarian Monarchy exemplified by the comparison between Zofka Kveder and Helene von Druskowitz.

DESCRIPTION:When we think of antiquity names like Socrates\, Plato and Aristoteles come to mind. The names of the female philosophers had been forgotten for a long time\, which doesn’t mean that there haven’t been any: Themistoclea\, Theano\, Arignote\, Aspasia and Diotima; just to name a few. With her book series A History of Women Philosophers Prof. Dr. Mary Ellen Waithe introduced 20th century philosophers to the teachings and writings of female philosophers\, thereby integrating along lines of gender what was previously believed to have been the history of philosophy. This seminar focuses on the content of her first book in this series\, the ancient women philosophers\, and expands the scope of that work by introducing another woman philosopher of that era. In addition\, Dr. Waithe will share research methodology through which students may themselves discover previously-unknown women philosophers. This seminar is an opportunity to work with Dr. Waithe to take a closer look at these early philosophers and their teachings\, to assess scholarship that was based on Dr. Waithe’s history\, and\, perhaps\, to rediscover a “new” woman philosopher from antiquity. DESCRIPTION:The dispute between Leibniz and Newton on the nature of space and time is legendary. The famous correspondence between Leibniz\, Clarke and Caroline reflects the methodological and metaphysical differences between Leibniz and the Newtonians in their approaches to natural philosophy. Less known\, but no less remarkable is Émilie Du Châtelet’s analysis and discussion of this dispute in her principal work Foundations of Physics (Institutions de physiques 1740/42). In contrast to many of her contemporaries – including Voltaire with his Éléments de la philosophie de Newton – Du Châtelet was not willing to follow a one-sided Newtonianism nor a one-sided Leibnizianism. Therefore\, she designed her own blueprint of the “building of physics” where especially the chapters about space and time play an important role for they operate as a link between the general principles of our knowledge (including the justification of employing hypotheses) and the subsequent consideration of matter\, bodies\, motion and forces. Such consistent and embracing course was only composed before by Rohault on a Cartesian basis. The Institutions can be considered as a document of the refutation of Cartesianism in France which paved simultaneously the way for further developments. Du Châtelet reconsidered the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence and presented a reformulated version of the spacetime problem that anticipates\, in some sense\, the decisive role of space and time which is known from Immanuel Kant’s later work. \nTogether with the physicist Dr. Dr. Suisky from Humboldt University Berlin Du Châtelet’s chapters about space and time will be read and discussed in comparison to passages from the Leibniz-Clarke correspondence and Kant’s texts. Leonard Euler’s important work Betrachtungen über Raum und Zeit (Réflexions sur l’espace et le tems) will be considered as well. \nThe Seminar is held in German language. International Leibniz Congress in Hanover.\nThe French philosophe Émilie Du Châtelet has emerged in the last few decades as a prominent figure of the European Enlightenment. More recently\, it has been widely perceived that the first half of the 18th century\, roughly her lifetime (1706-1749)\, represents the decisive era in this period of intellectual history. Central ideas of Enlightenment thought were elaborated during these few decades and one of its most important contributors was Émilie Du Châtelet.\nAfter her premature death 1749\, she was first dismissed then perceived exclusively as natural philosopher. Lately\, it has become more and more evident how broad the spectrum of her work is and which impact it had on consecutive thinkers. The contributions of an increasing number of researchers gives proof of that.\nThe Émilie Du Châtelet section at the X. International Leibniz Congress in Hanover aims to bring together European and American scholars\, thus giving the Du Châtelet research community an opportunity to exchange about the upcoming fields of investigation. DESCRIPTION:Contrary to many movements in the history of philosophy\, the “Phenomenological Movement” has from its beginnings included numerous female philosophers. They contributed substantially to the phenomenological project by developing outstanding philosophical accounts and addressing problems\, which remain relevant until today. Phenomenology’s exceptionally modern outlook\, not to let oneself be influenced by traditional authorities\, but rather to only receive guidance from ”the things themselves”\, allowed its female proponents to achieve a position in the academic world few women could enjoy at the time. From today’s perspective\, the most noteworthy issues that some of the prominent female phenomenologists elaborated on fall under the scope of what one would today label social ontology and political philosophy. \nThe conference will investigate specifically the contribution of women phenomenologists in this field. The programme focuses on\, but is not restricted to\, the following philosophers: Hannah Arendt\, Luce Irigaray\, Edith Stein\, Hedwig Conrad-Martius and Gerda Walther. \nThe conference language is English.

Particularly recent publications as “Emilie du Châtelet between Leibniz and Newton” (2011) revalued her contributions to the main Enlightenment debates on natural philosophy. Nevertheless\, Du Châtelet research does not so far fully exhaust her scientific outcome. Her achievements as moral and social philosopher as well as the systematic of her work as a whole still require thorough investigation.\nAs a leading institution of the études émiliennes\, the Teaching and Research Area “History of Women Philosophers and Scientists” at the Philosophy Department of the University of Paderborn (Germany) wishes to contribute to this amplification of Du Châtelet studies. DESCRIPTION:Am Donnerstag\, 16. Juli wird die international bekannte und universalbegabte Philosophin Émilie du Châtelet von Studierenden der Universität inszeniert. In diesen Vorstellungen werden das philosophische Wirken von Émilie du Châtelet und die Auseinandersetzung mit dem zeitgenössischen Philosophen Julien Offray de La Mettrie näher beleuchtet. Die studentischen Vorstellungen beginnen um 19.30 Uhr im Deelenhaus in der Krämerstraße 8-10 in Paderborn. Diese Inszenierungen entstanden im Rahmen des interdisziplinären und förderpreisprämierten Seminarzyklus „Philosophie in den Medien“\, der von Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber\, Prof. Dr. Dr. Gerhard E. Ortner\, Ulrich Lettermann und Bernhard Koch ins Leben gerufen wurde. Ihr Anliegen ist es\, die Philosophie der breiten Öffentlichkeit zugänglich zu machen.\nMit ihrem enfant terrible Julian Offray de La Mettrie unterhielt die grande dame der französischen Aufklärung Émilie du Châtelet einen Jahrzehnte währenden literarischen Disput\, der in ihren Schriften über das Glück den Höhepunkt erreichte.\nDie Studierenden bieten dramaturgisch\, musikalisch und filmisch in drei kurzen Stücken Elemente der moralphilosophischen Arbeiten Émilie du Châtelets und Julian Offray de La Mettries dar – unter anderem in Form eines gregorianischen Chorals und Theaterstücks mit filmischen Komponenten.\nWer erfahren möchte\, welche Indikatoren ein glückliches Leben nach Émilie du Châtelet auszeichnen\, ist herzlich eingeladen\, an dieser freien und einmaligen Veranstaltung teilzuhaben.
