SUMMARY:Women and their body
DESCRIPTION:Recent events have shown that it is urgent and fundamentally important to shed new light\, through philosophical\, linguistic\, literary\, scientific\, medical and artistic perspectives\, on the female body and the position of women in relation to their body. Too often it seems that women do not have the right to determine their own body\, although men have never been deprived of this right. The question of power over the body is strongly linked to the distinction between men and women. It seems that men have more rights and power on their own body than women. But how is this possible? What is the status of the female body in culture and society? Why is the female body both\, an object of desire and a battlefield for demonstrating male power? To what extent have medicine and technology interfered in recent years with the female body and with what consequences? \nThe conference Women and their body intends to enlarge the network by making it more interdisciplinary\, starting with a multidisciplinary Talk Series and Conference. Early scholars as well as established researchers are invited to send abstracts covering different fields in the humanities\, speaking about Women and their body. New Voices is a place to connect and to foster communication on our work. \nIn the Talk Series from Winter 2022/23\, there are 6 meetings/dates (completely on Zoom) and on March\, 15th\, 16th and 17th 2023\, an international\, hybrid conference will take place\, with a Masterworkshop on March 15th. \nRegistration is now open to everybody interested in the subject (no registration fees): https://indico.uni-paderborn.de/event/21/ \n  \nFor further information or any question\, please feel free to send an email to contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org

SUMMARY:Locke and the Ladies. On Eighteenth-Century Female Republicans in England
DESCRIPTION:Prof. Karen Green (University of Melbourne)\nCourse Description\nThis course will focus on the reception of John Locke’s classical liberalism and republicanism among women in 18th-Century England\, particularly Catharine Trotter Cockburn and Catharine Macaulay. It will begin with a discussion of recent controversies over the role of Locke in the development of republicanism (Pocock\, Israel\, Pettit) in order to motivate reading Cockburn and Macaulay. After providing an overview of the lives and works of Cockburn and Macaulay\, students will sign-up for presentations on readings by these women for next two afternoons. Wednesday will concentrate on Cockburn\, her defence of Locke’s moral epistemology\, and her play on The Revolution of Sweden (1706). Thursday will focus on Macaulay\, specifically on sections from her Treatise on the Immutability of Moral Truth (1783) and the sections of her History of England (1763-83) defending the execution of Charles I. The aim will be to demonstrate the continuity between Cockburn and Macaulay\, and their importance for understanding eighteenth-century republicanism in England. SUMMARY:Master Class: Hannah Arendt Today. The Evil of Banality
DESCRIPTION:In this 2 day Master Class\, Prof. Elizabeth Minnich will discuss the philosophy of Hannah Arendt\, with special emphasis on Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on The Banality of Evil. This serves as the background for Minnich’s latest book\, The Evil of Banality: On The Life and Death Importance of Thinking (2017). This work presents elaborates the concept of “extensive evils” through the examples of as slavery\, human trafficking\, economic exploitation\, for-profit penitentiaries\, etc. Minnich considers explanations of the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of extensive evils by social psychologists and historians such as Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo\, whose work on obedience to authority and peer pressure she challenges. \nDates and times: \nJuly 27\, 2018 – 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-17:00 \nJuly 28\, 2018 – 10:00-13:00 \nLocation: \nTechnologiepark 21 \n  \nElizabeth Minnich is Professor of Philosophy at Queens University of Charlotte (Charlotte\, North Carolina) and Distinguished Fellow at the Association of American Colleges & Universities. She received her PhD from the New School for Social Research in 1977. Her dissertation\, “Philosophy\, Democracy and Communication: A Study of John Dewey As Political Philosopher\,” was supervised by Hannah Arendt and Richard Bernstein. She was Hannah Arendt’s teaching assistant in 1969-70\, at the time when Arendt was defending her report on the trial of Adolf Eichmann (“The Engineer of the Nazi Final Solution”). This is where Arendt announced her controversial observation concerning the “the banality of evil.” In the years since then\, Minnich has continued reflecting on\, researching\, and writing about evil\, which culminates in her reversal of Arendt’s concept: the evil of banality. \nParticipants are encouraged to send questions to Prof. Minnich via email. \n  \nRelated Events: Libori Summer School 2018
