SUMMARY:AG DG Phil/IAPh Panel XXVI. Deutscher Kongress für Philosophie 24.09.2024
DESCRIPTION:Dear members of the working group\, dear members of the IAPH\, dear interested Scholars\, \nI would like to cordially invite you to the activities planned by the Working Group on Women in the History of Philosophy within the framework of this year’s congress of the German Society of Philosophy. \nAs was the case three years ago\, our activities will be coordinated with the group of the International Association of Women Philosophers (IAPH). \nOn Tuesday\, 24. September\, from 9 to 11 a panel (F2) of the Working Group on Women in the History of Philosophy and the IAPH will take place. \nOn Tuesday\, 24. September\, 6 pm (room F234) we cordially invite you to a network meeting. \nWe would be delighted if you came to see the activities of the AG. Plans will be made\, ideas will be found and common projects will be realised. Please make a note of the AG’s annual conference\, which will take place on 11-12 April. April 2025 with the working title: Philosophers on Economy\, Politics and Society. \nThe events are open to all interested parties. Feel free to write to me if you have any questions. \nDetailed programme: \nThe AG Women in the History of Philosophy (*2017) \nhttps://www.dgphil.de/ags/allgemein/frauen-in-der-geschichte-der-philosophie \nThe study of the history of women philosophers has developed into an important area of critical research in the history of philosophy. The Working Group in the German Society for Philosophy is a place of exchange and information on the history of women philosophers. Research and teaching are given equal consideration. Numerous workshops and conferences\, online and in person\, invite us to share and expand our knowledge. \nThe meetings offer the opportunity to meet members\, active researchers and teachers\, to network and to plan joint activities. \nWithin the framework of this year’s Philosophy Congress in Münster: #Digital Thinking\, the theme is also reflected in the topics of the speakers. \nTuesday 24.09.2024\, 9:00 – 11:00 FROM ANALOGUE TO DIGITAL – Panel of the Panel of the DGPhil AG Women in the History of Philosophy and the International Association of Women Philosophers (Room F2)\nUrsula Martin: Mary Somerville and Ada Lovelace: networks in the making of nineteenth-century British science \nMary Somerville (1780-1872) was a bestselling Scottish writer on science and mathematics: the English aristocrat Ada Lovelace (1815-1853) published an article on computing that now seems remarkably prescient. Self-taught\, both were excluded from universities and scientific institutions such as London’s Royal Society.  Today\, their work is often described as ‘translations’ and ‘popular scientific writing’\, reflecting and reinforcing their seemingly marginal position.  Yet both were fluent in several languages and were active members of British and European scientific networks of men and women who corresponded\, exchanged visits and read each other’s work.  Their writings deserve to be seen as mainstream contributions to nineteenth-century scientific discussions. \nBiography: Ursula Martin is Professor Emerita of the Universities of Edinburgh and Oxford. A distinguished researcher at the interface of mathematics and computer science\, she has published widely on the use of computation and artificial intelligence in mathematical proof and its wider implications for mathematical practice.  She led the first examination of Ada Lovelace’s mathematical archive and is the author of a popular book on Lovelace. In recent years she has worked closely with Oxford libraries and museums to find new ways of telling the story of the origins of computing and AI. \nSabine Thürmel: Current Developments in Computer Science from the Perspective of Women in the Humanities \nCuriositas mater sapientiae est (Roman proverb: curiosity is the mother of wisdom): this is especially true for female humanities scholars assessing current developments in computer science. Each of the scholars presented in this lecture has developed a unique perspective and a specific approach.  The depth and timeliness of their contributions will be demonstrated by focusing on their work on generative AI and their publications in 2023 and 2024. \nSabine Thuermel is an independent researcher and lecturer at the Technische Universität München (TUM)\, Munich\, Germany. Her background is in both computer science (Ph.D. in Computer Science in 1989) and philosophy (Ph.D. in Philosophy of Science and Technology in 2013). An overview of her interdisciplinary work on the foundations and effects of culture-changing information technologies can be found on her website http://www.sabinethuermel.de/\, where computer science meets philosophy. \nPedro Pricladnitzky Philosophical Connections: Exploring the Digitisation of Brazilian Women Philosophers from Paderborn to Brazil”. \nThis paper explores the digitisation of Brazilian women philosophers\, highlighting their philosophical contributions and historical significance. It examines how digital platforms preserve and disseminate their work\, addressing their underrepresentation in philosophy. The Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists plays a crucial role in providing a framework for digitisation and preservation\, thus facilitating the integration of these philosophers into the global canon. \nPedro Pricladnitzky is a researcher at the Centre for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists at the University of Paderborn. His work focuses on the critical digital edition of Émilie du Châtelet’s Institutions de Physique and their integration into early modern natural philosophy. He is also interested in Brazilian and Latin American women writers in the history of philosophy. \nIAPH Cristina Sánchez Muñoz: Political Violence and Gender. Exclusions\, Reductions and Challenges \nIn this paper I will analyse the role that violence against women plays in the very definition of politics. We will focus on the violence against women that takes place in war scenarios\, with a particular emphasis on sexual violence. Several philosophers have worked on this issue (Brownmiller\, Schott\, MacKinnon\, Card\, Copelon among others). I will use Kate Millet’s work Sexual Politics as a frame of reference to analyse a sexual politics of wars as political violence. This will allow us to identify the main features of contemporary wars in which violence against women plays a central role as a political objective. I will present the main debates that have taken place in contemporary feminist theory on this issue and the changes that have occurred both in the perception of armed conflicts and in the legal responses to sexual violence. \nCristina Sánchez is Professor of Philosophy of Law at the Autonomous University of Madrid\, Spain.  In her academic career she has developed two lines of research: On the one hand\, the study of Hannah Arendt’s thought\, and on the other hand\, contemporary feminist theory and women’s citizenship\, within the framework of political philosophy. She has been a visiting scholar in Chile\, Colombia and Mexico. She is Co-Speaker of the IAPH\, Unesco Chair in Public Policies and Gender at the Autonomous University of Madrid\, and member of the jury of the Hannah Arendt Prize for Political Thought of the Heinrich Böll Foundation. \nTuesday 24.09.2024\, 18:00 – 19:00 Networking meeting of members and friends of the DGPhil AG Women in the History of Philosophy and the International Association of Philosophers (Room F)\nWith kind regards\, \nRuth E. Hagengruber \nDirector of the AG Women in the History of Philosophy and Director of the International Association of Women Philosophers

SUMMARY:Émilie Du Châtelet’s Scientific Methodology Hypotheses and the Principles of Knowledge
DESCRIPTION:International Online Conference \nÉmilie Du Châtelet’s Scientific Methodology: Hypotheses and the Principles of Knowledge \n23rd/24th of May 2024 \nOrganized by Clara Carus\, Head of the DFG-Research Project :The Relationship between the Theory of Hypotheses and the Principles of Knowledge in Émilie Du Châtelet \nat the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists \nKeynote Address: Katherine Brading (Duke University) \nInterest and scholarship on Du Châtelet has been growing exponentially recently. Many Du Châtelet scholars see her newfound scientific methodology at the heart of her philosophy. Du Châtelet developed an intriguing theory of hypotheses\, elaborating on the scope\, legitimacy\, content and proper establishment of hypotheses. Furthermore\, she put forward an account of knowledge on the basis of self-evident axiomatic principles of knowledge. In Du Châtelet’s scientific methodology the principles of knowledge and the theory of hypotheses stand in a compelling relation. Du Châtelet takes up important ideas from Descartes\, Leibniz\, Wolff\, Locke and Newton (among others) and develops them further in her scientific methodology\, while consciously distancing herself from other aspects of their works. \nThis workshop features some of the most prominent Du Châtelet scholars as well as international experts in Early Modern Methodology and is committed to exploring Du Châtelet’s scientific methodology in its content and historic significance. It will be a fun and inclusive event\, which is open to students and faculty alike. \nAll are welcome and attendance is free. Please register at clara.carus@uni-paderborn.de with your name\, email address and affiliation (if applicable). \nSpeakers: Katherine Brading (Keynote)\, Fatema Amijee\, Peter Anstey\, Clara Carus\, Katherine Dunlop\, Andrew Janiak\, Ruth Hagengruber\, Qiu Lin\, Pedro Prikladnitzky\, Andrea Reichenberger\, Natalia Lorena Zorrilla Sirlin\, Aaron Wells \nDates: 23rd of May 2024 1.45pm-5.30pm CET & 24th of May 2024 9.45am-5.30pm CET \nLocation: Online/Zoom \nFull program here.

SUMMARY:Voices from Ukraine: Women Philosophers and Scientists Against War and Ecocide
DESCRIPTION:Where: University of Paderborn\, Paderborn\, Germany \nWhen: October 27th-28th\, 2023 \nType of Conference: Hybrid \nThe conference is organized by Prof. Dr. Kateryna Karpenko\, Director of the Center for Gender Education of  National Medical University (KHNMU) & Prof. Dr. Ruth E. Hagengruber\, Director of the internationally acting Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists. This project has received funding through the MSCA4Ukraine project\, which is funded by the European Union. The talks will be held in Englisch. Discussions can be in English\, German and Ukrainian. In addition an Ukrainian-German Interpreter (Prof. Dr. Volodymyr Abashnik) will be present via Zoom. \nToday\, it is becoming obvious that demonstrating its inability to win in a direct military confrontation\, Russia is purposefully implementing traditional\, patriarchal tactics of domination to destroy the Ukrainian economy and environment. \nThe purpose of this conference\, on the one hand\, is to show\, that the airstrikes mainly target Ukraine’s critical life support infrastructure\, industrial facilities\, oil and fuel depots\, chemical and pharmaceutical depots\, public utilities such as sewage pumping stations\, power stations and railways. \nOn the other hand\, the task is to prove that this tactic being accompanied by a public demonstration and self-praise of the masculine superiority of the leaders is a pathetic imitation of it. It will be disclosed the fact that the Russian war against Ukraine means violence\, poverty\, forced displacement\, broken lives\, insecurity and lack of a future\, depletion of nature\, and ecocide. \nThe important topics of discussions will be the ontological\, phenomenological\, and existential dimensions of ecocide at the time and after the war. Ecofeminism and the ethics of care will become the methodological basis for analyzing the phenomena of ecocide. \nThe speakers include Oksana Zabuzhko (Receiver of France’s Legion of Honor)\, Dr. Tatiana Perga (Senior Researcher of ‘Institute of World History of National Academy of Science of Ukraine’)\, Dr. Iryna Utiuzh (Department of Social Sciences\, Zaporizhzhia State Medical University)\, Dariya Tsymbalyuk\, Iryna Zamuruyeva\, Pina Piccolo\, Prof. Dr. Tetiana Gardashuk\, Cynthia R. Nielsen (Professor of Philosophy at the University of Dallas)\, Valeria Korablyova\, Angela Boyko\, Mariya Shcherbyna\, Tentyana Chumachenko\, Natalia Martynenko\,Oksana Nakonechna. \nFor Registration\, send an e-mail to contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org with the subject “VoFUkr Registration”. Also include if you will participate online or in-person. \nHere is the Preliminary Program. \n \n

SUMMARY:Invited Symposium Expanding the Canon at ECAP11
DESCRIPTION:On August 24\, Ruth E. Hagengruber (Paderborn University)\, Sabrina Ebbersmeyer (University of Copenhagen)\, and Sophia Connell (Birkbeck University of London) will offer a symposium on “Expanding the Canon”. The Invited Symposium is part of this year’s ECAP11. Please find the ECAP11 program as well as further information here. \n  \nIn the Symposium “Expanding the Canon\,” Ruth E. Hagengruber\, Sabrina Ebbersmeyer\, and Sophia Connell discuss the following topics: \nDepictions of ‘typical’ philosophers are almost entirely of white men\, preferably with beards. The idea of a wise\, reflective\, genius type has almost always been a male-coded ideal and for the most part tracks white supremist and exceptionalist ideology. \nSince the 1990s significant progress was made in bringing women philosophers back into our histories of the early modern period (O’Neill 1998\, Hutton 2015). Black feminists made a similar case for black female intellectuals\, some of whom should count as philosophers; these thinkers have been ignored or excluded from our histories mostly due to genre and circumstance (Hill Collins 1990). \nAlongside this positive incorporation of gender and ethnic diversity in the philosophical conversation\, has been the steady progression of an all-white male narrative of analytic philosophy\, written almost exclusively by men (e.g. Soames 2003\, Glock 2008). This story is false and it is easy to prove it to be so \nSophia Connell will introduce the work of a number of very important\, influential and intellectually powerful female philosophers from the period 1830-1970\, whose ideas form the basis of contemporary analytic philosophy. She will particularly touch on Maria W. Stewart\, whose public speeches contain the roots of civic rights arguments still crucial to political philosophy\, Dr Sophie Bryant\, the first woman to hold a postdoctoral degree in Philosophy in the United Kingdom\, who advocated for education for women and minorities through virtue-based discussions\, Professor Grace De Laguna\, whose speculative brand of philosophical investigation is still influential\, and Professor Alice Ambrose Lazerowitz\, whose transatlantic ponderings in the early 1930s would help to shape the very way we do philosophy today. \nRuth Hagengruber will reflect on how women have critically examined the concepts of philosophy\, discussed or questioned the history of philosophy itself\, exposed idolatry\, and were active in important areas of religious criticism. She will briefly discuss Du Chatelet and Kant to illustrate the problems that arise from this sexist exclusion and that shape a history of philosophy that is still marked by abridgements\, half-truths and plagiarism. \nSabrina Ebbersmeyer will talk about mechanisms of exclusion\, text genres\, and modes of writing historiography\, and will be mostly focussing on the German context during the 19th century.

SUMMARY:Women and their body
DESCRIPTION:Recent events have shown that it is urgent and fundamentally important to shed new light\, through philosophical\, linguistic\, literary\, scientific\, medical and artistic perspectives\, on the female body and the position of women in relation to their body. Too often it seems that women do not have the right to determine their own body\, although men have never been deprived of this right. The question of power over the body is strongly linked to the distinction between men and women. It seems that men have more rights and power on their own body than women. But how is this possible? What is the status of the female body in culture and society? Why is the female body both\, an object of desire and a battlefield for demonstrating male power? To what extent have medicine and technology interfered in recent years with the female body and with what consequences? \nThe conference Women and their body intends to enlarge the network by making it more interdisciplinary\, starting with a multidisciplinary Talk Series and Conference. Early scholars as well as established researchers are invited to send abstracts covering different fields in the humanities\, speaking about Women and their body. New Voices is a place to connect and to foster communication on our work. \nIn the Talk Series from Winter 2022/23\, there are 6 meetings/dates (completely on Zoom) and on March\, 15th\, 16th and 17th 2023\, an international\, hybrid conference will take place\, with a Masterworkshop on March 15th. \nRegistration is now open to everybody interested in the subject (no registration fees): https://indico.uni-paderborn.de/event/21/ \n  \nFor further information or any question\, please feel free to send an email to contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org

SUMMARY:Conference 'Collecting the Heritage: South-East European Women Philosophers'
DESCRIPTION:The Research Center for Women in Philosophy (CIŽUF) at the Institute of Philosophy in Zagreb is proud to invite you to the conference \nCollecting the Heritage: South-East European Women Philosophers \nwhich will take place in a hybrid mode at the Institute of Philosophy in Zagreb and online on 2nd and 3rd December 2022. \nFind the link for online participation here. \nThe region of South-East Europe is problematic from many perspectives. It was the region in which the famous Theodosian border cut the oikoumene in two parts which resulted in two different historical and cultural developments: Western Europe and Eastern Europe. The region is marked by a variety of perspectives and historical tensions: the Christian Europe vs. the Ottoman Empire\, the Catholic “West” vs. the Orthodox “East”\, communism vs. transition to capitalism\, the 19 th -century desire to unite vs. the late 20 th -century desire to split\, life at the border vs. the magnetism of the center\, periphery of the cultural world vs. authentic and independent cultural identity\, shame vs. comes The list could go on. \nDue to linguistic barriers\, ie the Western lack of interest in getting acquainted with texts in “different” languages\, works of many women philosophers of the region are still not known to the rest of the world. In order to change that\, we encourage to contribute to the with some of the following topics: \n\nMore general overviews of women philosophers of the past in a particular SE European country.\nIntellectual biography of a single SE European woman philosopher.\nWomen’s education and philosophy.\nWomen philosophers in context:\n\nof religious and cultural diversity\,\nof specificity of communism\,\nof transitions.\n\n\nIs there a common philosophical denominator of SE European women philosophers?\nAre there specific feminist movements within single SE European countries?\nSE European women philosophers and recent refugee crises.\n\nThis invitation is also a call for papers for a special issue that aims at collecting articles that will popularize women philosophers of South-East Europe. Selected texts will be published in the Journal of the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists (BRILL)\, Volume 2\, Issue 1 (2023) with guest editors Luka Boršić and Ivana Skuhala Karasman. \nOrganizing Committee: \nPh.D. Ivana Suhala Karasman\nPh.D. Ana Maskalan\nProf. Ph.D. Ankica Čakardić\nPh.D. Luka Boršić \n  \nPlease find the whole program of the conference here.

SUMMARY:Émilie Du Châtelet in Relation to Leibniz and Wolff – Similarities and Differences
DESCRIPTION:e are delighted to present our newly started DFG funded project which is dedicated to exploring all aspects of Émilie Du Châtelet’s important relationship to Leibniz and Wolff. Émilie Du Châtelet’s account of knowledge has broadly been introduced as a version of Leibnizian or Wolffian metaphysics. More recently\, as scholarship on her work has become more detailed\, this classification has been put into question. Most importantly\, the question has been posed as to whether this classification of Du Châtelet’s epistemic contributions as ‘Leibnizian’ or ‘Wolffian’ misses the original approach and newfound ideas in Du Châtelet’s work. This project seeks to encourage further research on the theme and invites scholars to explore Du Châtelet’s contribution to the history of philosophy in relation to Leibniz and Wolff. We are asking in detail in what aspects Du Châtelet is inspired by Leibniz or Wolff respectively\, and where she may differ from them? \nProfessor Jeffrey McDonough\, Harvard University\, is Mercator Fellow in the project and is joining the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists for the academic year. Dr. Clara Carus is a postdoctoral researcher in the project. Prof. Dr. Ruth Hagengruber is head of the project. \nFrom the 28th – 30th of September 2022 we will host a workshop dedicated to the theme at the Center for the History of Women Philosophers and Scientists in Paderborn. Confirmed keynote speakers are Katherine Brading (Duke University) and Anne-Lise Rey (Paris Nanterre). Mercator Fellow Jeffrey McDonough (Harvard University) will hold a welcome speech. Further confirmed invited speakers are Julia Borcherding (University of Cambridge/LMU) and Tinca Prunea-Bretonnet (Institute of Philosophy and Psychology\, Romanian Academy/University of Bucharest). The full programme will soon be available on this website. If you would like to join the conference as a guest please register at contact@historyofwomenphilosophers.org by the 15th of September. \nFor more information visit our conference page\, click here

SUMMARY:Kloster Kirchberg Symposion: Künstliche Intelligenz – Heilsbringer oder Vernichter der Menschheit?
SUMMARY:Stein’s and Husserl’s Intertwined Itineraries 1916-25
DESCRIPTION:Edith Stein attempted already in her doctorate to complement Husserl’s work on phenomenology by a painstaking analysis of empathy including its indispensable role in the constitution of the psycho-physical individual and the person. As Husserl’s assistant 1918-20 she famously edited in particular his Ideas II\, perhaps introducing within it a view of this relationship foreign to Husserl’s. This conference attempts to shed light on this matter by bringing into focus the integrity and coherence of their respective contributions in advance of the appearance of the new and revised edition of Ideas II. The The focus of this conference and its theme are on Husserl and Stein’s respective understanding of the constitution of the body\, and its importance for intersubjectivity and transcendental phenomenology. \nConference organizer: \nRuth E. Hagengruber\, Center HWPS/Padeborn University\, Germany \nMette Lebech\, Maynooth University\, Ireland \nThe conference will take place from May 20 to May 21 2021 as an online conference. The preliminary program is available at the conference page. A link to the Zoom event will announced in time. \nFor more information visit our conference page. \n

SUMMARY:SSWPH Inaugural Conference
DESCRIPTION:Call for Papers: Inaugural Conference of the Society for the Study of Women in Phenomenology (SSWPH)\n\n\nThe Society for the Study of Women in Phenomenology (SSWPH) announces its inaugural international conference to be held virtually from March 19–20\, 2021.\n\n\nKeynote Speakers:\n\n\nSarah Borden-Sharkey (Wheaton College\, IL)\nHelen Fielding (Western University)\nRuth Hagengruber (Paderborn University)\nJulia Jansen (KU Leuven)\n\nRosemary Rizo-Patrón de Lerner (Pontificia Universidad Católica del Perú) The Society for the Study of Women in Phenomenology (SSWPH) is a learned society focused on researching the work of women in phenomenology and phenomenological philosophy. We have three objectives. First\, we wish to uncover and critically examine the work of women in phenomenology or phenomenological philosophy from the early phenomenological movement to the current day\, including but not limited to such figures as Hedwig Conrad-Martius\, Edith Stein\, Gerda Walther\, Simone de Beauvoir\, María Zambrano\, Hannah Arendt\, Sylvia Wynter\, Iris Marion Young\, María Lugones\, Angela Ales Bello\, Roberta De Monticelli\, Judith Butler\, Linda Martín Alcoff\, Mariana Ortega\, and Jacqueline Martinez. Second\, we wish to create a dialogue between those working in the phenomenological tradition and other schools of thought and research methods to address questions of philosophical import. Third\, we seek to cultivate new phenomenological\, philosophical work that draws inspiration from and/or extends the ideas of the thinkers of the Society’s focus. We carry out our mandate through a series of conferences\, workshops\, debates\, translation projects\, and scholarly publications. The Society is open to all scholars interested in the work of women in phenomenology or phenomenological philosophy. We invite abstracts of no more than 300 words for papers to be presented at our first conference. Presenters will have between 20 and 30 minutes to present their papers. We welcome papers on the work of women phenomenologists and phenomenologically informed philosophers. Also welcome are papers that use women’s phenomenology to address issues or questions in philosophy. Papers that focus on the history of phenomenology and/or dialogue with other disciplines or fields of philosophy are also encouraged. The deadline for submission of abstracts is December 20\, 2020. Please send abstracts to: Julia Mühl-Sawatzki (julia.muehl.sawatzki@upb.de) and Antonio Calcagno (acalcagn@uwo.ca). Please direct any questions to Julia Mühl-Sawatzki and/or Antonio Calcagno.\n\n\nFor further information please visit our website: www.sswph.org

SUMMARY:Women Philosophers in South-Eastern Europe – Past\, Present and Future
DESCRIPTION:The Research Center for Women in Philosophy organizes a conference under the title: Women Philosophers in South-Eastern Europe – Past\, Present and Future. The goal of the conference is to gather and exchange information on past and present women philosophers in South-Eastern Europe as well as future perspectives of women in philosophy in this region. There are two premises of the conference. The first is that while the research on women philosophers of the rest of Europe has been under way in the last few decades – or at least there is a significant growth in number and quality of scholarly texts on British\, French\, German\, Italian etc. women philosophers –\, there is little scholarly information on women philosophers of South-Eastern Europe. The second is that there is relatively little contact and mutual collaboration between presently active South-East European women philosophers as well as researchers on gender philosophy and gender-aware history of philosophy of the region. With these challenges in mind\, possible topics would include the following themes: \n\nthe situation with women philosophers in your country in the past:\n\nhow many women philosophers were there in the past\, their works\, activities etc.\none particular woman philosopher of the past who stands out;\n\n\nthe situation with women philosophers in your country now:\n\nwhat is the overall situation with professional (and amateur) women philosophers in your country nowadays;\nwhat is the situation with gender studies and feminist theories in your country;\n\n\nwhat are the expectations for the future)\, are women promoted to study humanities/philosophy\, etc.? how does the job market for women philosophers in your country look like?\n\nWe are open to different ideas and formats. The main idea\, however\, is to meet (at least online) and exchange knowledge about the situation of women philosophers in our respective countries and get to know each other which might help us establish further collaborations. The Conference will take place online\, via Microsoft Teams platform.Conference date: December 15 – 17\, 2020.There is no Conference fee. There are still some presentation slots available – so if you are interested in an active (or passive) participation\, let us know at the following email: luka@ifzg.hr
